CMPC decided to go for the most energy efficient tissue machine in the world CMPC Talagante TM3

The Advantage DCT 200 machine supplied by Valmet is currently holding the capacity record in Chile Carlos Hirigoyen and Felipe Harding are satisfied with energy saving capabilities. With Energy and Quality in mind CMPC s Talagante mill is located 50 km south west of Santiago, close to the river Maipo, surrounded by farmland and vine yards in a flourishing countryside. With a yearly production of tons of tissue paper the mill is today an important center of the tissue business in CMPC. Except from Chile, CMPC runs tissue production in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay. Each mill producing bulk products for the local market. In addition, the Talagante mill is also specialized for production of high quality tissue products such as printed napkins and other niched quality products for the whole Latin America. Room for growth The location of Talagante is important from a strategic point of view. We wanted a site close enough to the city of Santiago where the main consumption is. We also searched for good access of typical needs for a mill, such as energy, electricity, gas and of course workforce. And very important, with enough capacity to grow. That s why we purchased 100 hectares of farmland here in 1993 says Carlos Hirigoyen, Corporate Director of Industrial Development, CMPC Tissue S.A. A self-sufficient mill Today Talagante is a well-organized mill comprising three tissue production lines and a number of converting lines for roll products, folded and unfolded products like napkins, facial and hankies for the Away From Home and consumer market. They employ more or less 1,000 persons on daily basis. Talagante has its own cogeneration system started up as late as January, 2016 and they have also invested in a state-of-the-art water effluent treatment plant. Record high capacity and efficiency Of the total production capacity of tons, tons or even more, are produced by TM3, which is an Advantage DCT 200 machine installed by Valmet in It is currently the tissue machine with highest production capacity in Chile, holding the production record of 5,600 tons per month with an efficiency of 89.7%. In those figures we don t discount anything, just counting 30 days a month, full time operation. Even in times of external energy shortage we can t see any lack of efficiency. The machine is also extremely energy efficient reveals Felipe Harding De La Fuente, Mill Manager, Talagante. 2

the Advantage ViscoNip press The Talagante mill installed a Cogeneration system where Valmet provided the conceptual design and project to connect the exhaust system with TM3. Energy figures supporting the environmental strategy When we decided to go for machine number three we were of course looking for high production capacity but we also declared that we wanted to have the most energy efficient machine that could be found in the world at that time Mr. Harding continues. Mr. Hirigoyen fills in: Chile does not have oil or other conventional energy sources except for hydro, but many of the new hydroelectricity projects have been stopped due to environmental issues. In a few years the energy cost escalated rapidly and today we probably have the highest energy prices in Latin America. So for us it is a must to be as energy efficient as possible Energy efficiency an absolute demand The decision to select Valmet s Advantage tissue making technology was based on the provided efficiency warranty compared to the cost of investment. It wasn t necessarily the least expensive choice but when comparing it with the other suppliers the total cost of operation numbers favored Valmet. And I would say that the warranties has been achieved so we did not make any mistake about that. Inspiring machine design Once it was decided to install the most efficient and energy saving tissue machine equipped with an Advantage ViscoNip press and the highly efficient Advantage AirCap Yankee hood, they also started to look at the overall design of the machine hall. It was a trade off to the machine design. We tried to minimize the movement of the stock preparation and we decided locate everything to one floor, without a lot of equipment in the basement. So the machine design inspired us to focus on energy savings in the entire project tells Mr. Harding. Impressive energy figures He continues: Actually by today TM 3 is about 20-25% less energy consuming than our other machines when producing the same kind of grades. The low energy figures also support CMPC s environmental strategy. From a business perspective it is very important to be environmental sustainable in a long term. The company has been pioneers in Chile complying with the legislation. Ahead of legislation Mr. Hirigoyen emphasize that they always have tried to be one step ahead regarding environmental demands. At the time when we were designing the mill, Chile didn t have a real environmental legislation but a law was being discussed in the parliament. We decided to work according to the proposed law so when it came into force we were already compliant with the new legislation. 3

Amazing profiles and runnability One of the key components which has made it possible to realize the big energy saving is the Advantage ViscoNip press, with its uniform cross machine direction loading, operating over a wide range of linear loads. In addition to the energy saving possibilities the flexibility in loading towards the Yankee, also opens extensive potentials for product development. So far the flexibility in linear load has mainly been used to increase press dryness and reduce energy consumption. Despite the high linear load the paper quality has been great and has improved runnability also in converting. Recently some tests to run the ViscoNip with low nip load has been performed. Mr. Harding is satisfied with the outcome of the tests: We have been producing some light grades with improved softness during the last three months and we have been recording very good product quality, better compared to our other machines. The experience from operating the ViscoNip press has convinced CMPC that the flexible pressing method provided is an efficient tool to reduce energy consumption also in other mills. That s why they decided to upgrade their PM 11 in Caieiras, Brazil with an Advantage ViscoNip press for energy reasons. CMPC s strategic decision to go for the most energy efficient machine in the world when installing TM3 in Talagante turned out to be a lucky draw. In addition they also got the highest production capability in Chile. And as an extra bonus they are reducing the environmental impact, well in line with their strategic targets. Energy, runnability and quality improvements But the ViscoNip doesn t only benefit from energy savings and high quality products, also the runnability and product quality impress. He continues: Absolutely, we have very good moisture profiles. The profiles are more uniform, which improves the runnability. Comparing the weekly profile analyzes for all three machines, always gives the same result. TM3 Amaze, it outranks the other machines. Right quality at right time The profile issue is of course very important for the quality, not only to obtain a certain quality but to obtain it in a stable way. The consistency to get the right quality in a certain moment is what is most important for a tissue producer. Mr. Hirigoyen emphasizes. The Talagante mill is productin approximately 2,5 million paper rolls per day. 4

The flexible Advantage ViscoNip press is one of the reasons behind the significant energy savings. 5

CMPC Tissue SA 6 CMPC was established in Puente Alto, Chile in Eventually the plant started to produce tissue paper in the 50 ties. In early 90 ties the Puente Alto mill found itself surrounded by the city while further expansion was impossible. CMPC decided to build not only one, but two complete Greenfield mills. One in Talagante and one in Zarate, Argentina. Both mills started up within only a couple of months in 1995, and the expansion has been enormous so far. CMPC tissue have had an annual growth between five and fifteen percent, depending on country, the last ten years. Today the company operates 22 tissue machines in seven countries with a total production capacity in excess of annual tons of tissue products for the Latin American Consumers and Away from Home markets.
