2 The Satyama Initiative and the CBD The Satyama Initiative aims t cntribute t the CBD s three bjectives, in particular the secnd bjective, Sustainable use f bidiversity, thrugh prmting sustainable prductin and use f natural resurces in landscapes and seascapes arund the wrld. The Internatinal Partnership fr the Satyama Initiative (IPSI) was launched during CBD COP10 t facilitate and accelerate the implementatin f activities fr cnserving, restring and advancing sci-eclgical prductin landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) arund the wrld. The Satyama Initiative s usefulness in cntributing t human-influenced natural envirnments was recgnized in Decisins f the last tw COPs. (Decisin X/32 and XI/25 Sustainable use f bidiversity ). 2

3 The Satyama Initiative and the CBD s Strategic Plan and Aichi Bidiversity Targets At CBD COP10 in Aichi, Japan, the Strategic Plan fr Bidiversity and Aichi Bidiversity Targets were adpted with the visin f "Living in harmny with nature. The Satyama Initiative shares the same visin. Actins in sci-eclgical prductin landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS) can cntribute t achieving many f the Aichi Bidiversity Targets: 1. Peple s awareness; 4. Sustainable cnsumptin and prductin; 6. Marine living resurces management; 7. Sustainable agriculture, aquaculture and frestry; 11. Prtected areas; 13. Genetic diversity; 14. Ecsystems and essential services; 15. Ecsystems restratin and resilience; 17. NBSAPs; 18. Traditinal knwledge; 19. Knwledge, science, technlgies Visin Realizing scieties in harmny with nature 3

4 Sustainable Develpment Gals (SDGs) and the Satyama Initiative Ri+20 in Ri de Janeir in 2012 fcused n achieving sustainable develpment and alleviating pverty by transitining t a green ecnmy. Addressing issues n bidiversity and ecsystems is essential fr sustainable develpment. Currently prpsed SDGs by the Open Wrking Grup n SDGs include many gals related t bidiversity and ecsystems, including: Gal 2 n fd security Gal 6 n water and sanitatin Gal 12 n sustainable cnsumptin and prductin Gal 11 n cities and human settlements. Gal 14 n ceans and casts Gal 15 n terrestrial bidiversity Scially and eclgically sund appraches in prductin activities will play key rles in cnserving bidiversity and ecsystems while cntributing t pverty reductin. Activities in the Satyama Initiative shuld explre and demnstrate such appraches and accumulate successful mdels and experiences. 4

Lcal actins in SEPLS are imprtant t develp and accumulate actual mdels. Such activities shuld be in alignment with strengthening sci-ecnmic and eclgical resilience. By sharing experiences in different cntexts arund the wrld, imprtant lessns can be extracted and fed int glbal discussins. Thrugh interactins between glbal and lcal levels, lcal effrts can be further mtivated and be mre likely t succeed. This will als cntribute t glbal gals such as the Aichi Targets and SDGs.
