Presentation Outline What is Disinfection? UV vs. Chlorination What is UV disinfection? Design Requirements UV spectrum (LP & MP) Low Pressure UV vs. Medium Pressure UV Conventional System s configuration Effect of water flow on disinfection level Conventional Monitoring & Control Lamp intensity sensor

What is Disinfection? Disinfection Physical Heating (Boiling, Pasteurization) Membrane Filtration Radiation Gamma rays, X-rays UV Radiation Chemical Chlorine Chlorine Dioxide Chloramine Ozone Bromine Iodine Silver

UV vs. Chlorination UV Very effective against a variety of pathogens especially protozoa which are very resistant No safety problems associated with shipping and handling chemicals Does not generate dangerous by-products No residual effect Not corrosive Higher capital and operational costs (depends on sizing) Not affected by the water chemistry Chlorination Not effective against protozoa Depending on the type of chlorination used, safety is an issue Can create dangerous disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes Has a residual effect Very corrosive Low capital and operational costs Affected by the water chemistry ph and chlorine demand (depending on organic content and ammonia content)

UV vs. Chlorination- Continue

What is UV disinfection? Exposing contaminated water to radiation from UV light. A technology that has been used since The UV light penetrates the microorganisms cell walls and disrupts the cell s genetic material, making reproduction Impossible. Photons of UV light absorbed by molecules such as chloramines or NDMA lead to chemical change, resulting in their destruction.

Design Requirements Flow rate Water Quality/transmittance (UVT) Required Disinfection (dose/log reduction) Minimum required parameters UV Dose is the amount of UV light energy that the microorganism was exposed to, crossing the reactor. (The UV Dose is measured in mj/cm2) UVT is the % amount of light that passes through 1cm of water 1. Goal of the process? (Disinfection? if yes, to which bacteriological species we should refer to?) 2. Layout of the production process 3. Regulatory authority process demand? (such as EPA) 4. Piping diameter 5. Pressure in piping? 6. Water analysis (such as Turbidity, Hardness, PH, TSS, Metal concentrations etc.) 7. Redundancy?

Design Requirements- UV Transmittance High Transmittance Low Transmittance

Design Requirements- UV Transmittance- Continue Typical UV Transmittance Values Water Source Transmittance ( )% Ultrapure Water 100% Distilled Water 98% Drinking Water 85-95% Membrane (WW) 70-80% Secondary Filtered 65-70% Secondary Unfiltered 50-65% Meat Brine, Soft Drinks 0%

Spectral Emittance (rel( What wavelengths comprise the UV spectrum? Medium Pressure Lamp 8 Low Pressure Lamp Name (25m nm) Abbreviation Wavelength range in nanometers 4 Ultraviolet A, long wave UVA 400 nm 320 nm Ultraviolet B, Medium wave UVB 320 nm 280 nm 0 Ultraviolet C, Short wave UVC 280 nm 100 nm wavelength / nm

When referring to UV disinfection it is correct to use microbial inactivation rather than microbial kill because the microbes become damaged, not killed. In some cases reactivation will occur DNA repair can occur in the dark and in the light. The type of repair depends on the type of UV irradiation used

What wavelengths comprise the UV spectrum?- Continue UV light inactivates cells by damaging their DNA Low pressure (LP) UV lamps contain mercury gas at a low pressure (<10 Torr), and when excited by an electrical discharge emit light at 254nm Medium Pressure (MP) UV lamps contain mercury at much higher pressures (~1000 Torr). The UV is of higher intensity and use entire germicidal spectrum ( nm)

Effect of fluid temperature on the UV lamp performance

Low Pressure UV vs. Medium Pressure UV Low Pressure UV Narrower germicidal effect Medium Pressure UV Wide germicidal effect Cannot practically generate very high doses requires a vast number of lamps Can reach high doses, using less lamps Lower electricity consumption per lamp Higher electricity consumption per lamp High maintenance due to multiple lamps Easier maintenance

Medium Pressure Lamps are Better Uses entire germicidal spectrum for much better efficiency ( nm) Totally inactivates cells by damaging their repair mechanism Creates Thymine Dimers to inhibit DNA replication Adenoviruses are 2-3 times more sensitive to Medium Pressure UV

July 2016 The Lake County Health District confirms one person is dead as part of 11 cases linked to an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Lake County. According to Lake County Deputy Health Commissioner Ron Graham, the fatality occurred in July. The ten other people have now recovered. The bacteria that causes Legionnaires Disease was discovered in the cooling towers at Consolidated Precision Products on Lakeland Boulevard in Eastlake.

Full Scale installations Macro & Micro Fouling Thermal RO biofouling LGE-KU Trimble County Location Ohio River in Trimble County Kentucky USA Thermal PP The plant does not use any chlorine due to complexity of removing it. The rapid biofouling build up is removed by frequent cleaning cycles and this reduces membrane life time. Atlantium Hydro-Optic UV is installed to prevent biofouling as an alternative to biocide usage. RZ Flow rate: 600gpm 136m³/h Mussels, algae, and Hydrozoha 59
