3 Location Located in the North West of the Iberian Peninsula, the Principality of Asturias has a surface area of 10,604 km 2, its borders are clearly defined by natural features: Cantabrian Sea and Cantabric Mountains. 33% of this territory has some kind of environment protection figure It has 1,085,289 inhabitants with an average population density of 102,3 inhabitants/km 2. 4 Administrative Organization Asturias is one of the 17 Regions of the Kingdom of Spain The capital of the region is the city of Oviedo The region is divided into 78 municipalities Asturias government is responsible for the regional policies with respect to spatial and territorial planning, infrastructures, transport, industry, environment, health and education, among others The regional authority has 33,380 employees, and a budget of approx. 4,6 billion euros LoCaRe Kick Off Conference, Goteborg 15th April 2010 Pag. 4

5 The Asturian Economy The economic structure is characterised by the importance of the industrial sector, that represents 21,67% of the regional activity, with a clear predominance of small and medium size companies The iron and steel industry constitutes with mining one of the identifying features of the region. Metal industries like aluminium, zinc or copper manufactures are representative activities Other sectors of great importance for Asturias economy are agro alimentary, chemical and shipbuilding Services sector represents 62,6 % and has increased during the last years, and construction 13,87 % LoCaRe Kick Off Conference, Goteborg 15th April 2010 Pag. 5

6 Involvement in LoCaRe The regional ministry for environment, spatial planning and infrastructures is the department directly involved in LoCaRe project Some of their responsibilities: - spatial planning and urban development - road infrastructures, maritime affairs and transportation - environment quality prevention - water supply and sewage systems - drafting and implementing natural resource and species conservation policies - developing and managing environmental protection, sustainability and waste management procedures - mitigation and adaptation climate change policies LoCaRe Kick Off Conference, Goteborg 15th April 2010 Pag. 6
