Examples of Current ICT Projects Green Technology: Pavement Recycling; Air Toxics Safer Work Zones: Nighttime Construction; Crash Analysis, Speed Photo-Enforcement Secure Bridges: Chicago Bridge Assessment Renewal Energy: Wind Energy

ICT Projects Related to Traffic Safety Speed Photo Enforcement Nighttime Construction: Evaluation of Lighting Glare Crash Data Solutions & Engineering for Local Agencies Safety Performance Functions Alternative Intersections: Roundabout Evaluation and Design Safety Impacts of Shoulder Attributes Studying & Minimizing Work Zone Crashes Median Cable Scanning Tour

Speed Photo Enforcement PI: R. Benekohal Effects of automated speedradar photo enforcement (SPE) systems on traffic flow characteristics and safety in interstate work zones. Outcome: Improved work zone s safety for the traveling public and construction workers. Status: A draft report has been submitted

Nighttime Construction: Evaluating Lighting Glare PI s: El-Rayes, Liu, Elseifi, & Hassan Levels of glare and lighting performance of various lighting arrangements were analyzed and compared. Outcome: Recommendations for lighting arrangements that reduce and control glare at nighttime work zones. Status: Final report is available on ICT website.

Crash Data Analysis/Solutions for Local Agencies PI s: Ouyang & Li Developing a full-service safety program to identify high severe crash sites and to recommend cost-effective solutions that reduce severe injuries and fatalities. Outcome: An integrated Internet-based, GIS compatible software tool for the analysis of vehicle crashes on Illinois roadway Status: New software system has been developed and alpha-tested; final report is being reviewed.

Safety Performance Functions (SPF) PI: Y. Ouyang Providing statistical tools to identify and manage a program of sitespecific and systematic safety improvements Outcome: SPF equations and recommended locations in the Illinois roadway network for safety improvements and ultimately crash reduction Status: Results are incorporated into 2008 HSIP 5% Report; Project completion date Dec

Alternative Intersections Roundabout Evaluation & Design PI: R. Benekohal Evaluate modern roundabouts in the US which may be effective in reducing the severity and injury crashes at intersections. Outcome: Potential IDOT promotion of roundabouts at appropriate locations to improve safety (IDOT does not currently have design guide for roundabouts) and develop design guidelines for roundabouts. Status: Final report is being reviewed.

Safety Impacts of Shoulder Attributes PI: Z. Li Quantifying the extent to which the presence/absence and width of paved shoulders contribute to vehicle crashes; assessing the effectiveness of shoulder paving. Outcome: Help identify critical locations in need for pavement shoulder improvements. Status: Data collection ongoing; scheduled for completion in Dec

Studying & Minimizing Traffic-Related Work Zone Crashes PI s: K. El-Rayes/ L. Liu Investigating strategies to minimize severity and frequency of traffic-related work zone crashes as well as the practicality and effectiveness of previously proposed strategies. Outcome: Analysis of work zone crashes and recommendations for improving work zone layouts. Status: NEW PROJECT; recently awarded through RFP process.

Median Cable Scanning Tour PI: R. Benekohal Gathered information on system characteristics and performance of high-tension cable barrier systems from several states and manufacturers. Outcome: Identified effective and efficient approaches to reduce the number and severity of freeway median crossover crashes. Status: Completed in 2006 with excellent benefits to IL!

Other ICT Research Initiatives Safety projects are just samples of various ICT research. Other areas include: Green Technologies such as Recycled Asphalt Pavement, Environmentally Friendly Tires, and Wind- Powered Rest Areas.

Other ICT Research, continued Secure Bridges, including monitoring, estimating bridge scour, and rapid response evaluations. Innovative Pavements, including enhancing design, rehabilitation strategies, and predicting and controlling reflective cracking.
