Charleston Waterkeeper s Third Annual water ball an evening dedicated to clean water April 5, SC Aquarium - sponsorship packet - On April 5, 2012, Charleston Waterkeeper will host its third annual Water Ball at the South Carolina Aquarium. All funds raised from the evening will directly support Charleston Waterkeeper s efforts to measurably improve the quality of Charleston s waterways. Established in 2008, Charleston Waterkeeper is a data- driven, citizen- based nonproiit organization dedicated to protecting the public s right to clean water. We were founded on the fundamental belief that clean water is not the privilege of a few but the basic human right of all. Charleston Waterkeeper works to identify and resolve water pollution issues throughout the Charleston Harbor watershed. Through scientiiic monitoring, legal research, educational programming, community involvement, and public outreach Charleston Waterkeeper strives to protect the public s right to clean water. As a proud member program of the Waterkeeper Alliance, Charleston Waterkeeper joins nearly 200 other Waterkeeper programs from around the world in the Iight for clean water and strong communities.

2 - CELEBRATE - An evening dedicated to clean water. With more than 300 attendees at our inaugural event in 2010 and 350 in 2011, the Water Ball encourages all members of our great community to celebrate our fundamental right to clean, Iishable, swimmable, and enjoyable waterways. Over the past two years, the Water Ball has attracted nearly 700 attendees (past guests include Ted Turner, members of the Band of Horses, and representatives from the Waterkeeper Alliance) and has raised over $30,000 for our cause. The Water Ball, Charleston Waterkeeper s annual fundraising gala, highlights the balance between the serious nature of our work and the creative energy of our approach.

3 - SUPPORT - All funds raised at the Water Ball will help support our programs and operations. Water Quality Monitoring Program: As a data- driven organization, Charleston Waterkeeper is heavily reliant on science and empirical information to support our educational programs, community outreach, and advocacy campaigns. We have embarked on the development of a water quality monitoring program - created to identify and resolve water pollution issues throughout Charleston s waterways. Holy Sewage Campaign and Permitted Polluters: The Holy Sewage campaign highlights the state of sewage treatment in the Charleston Harbor watershed. Charleston Waterkeeper strives to educate the public about the water quality issues associated with sewage treatment and focuses on regular monitoring of all permitted polluters to ensure that facilities are in compliance with their particular permit. We work with facilities, stakeholders, and the public to advocate for clean water and shed light on issues rooting from sewage treatment. As always, we are a data- driven and our goal is ultimately focused on the solution versus the problem alone.

4 Patrol Program: Charleston Waterkeeper prides itself on maintaining a physical presence on the front lines. In the spirit of the anglers who founded the original Waterkeeper program on the Hudson River - Riverkeeper - we too recognize that it requires a constant presence to feel, Iirst- hand, the impact of pollution on a community. Through rigorous and continuous patrolling of the Hudson River, this group of Iishermen made great strides towards improving the Hudson River. We too believe this boots on the ground approach is the most effective and important means to the ongoing protection of our waterways. Stormwater Monitoring Program: Through tools made available by our water quality monitoring program and our patrol program, we are able to speciiically target suspicious sources of pollution by regularly testing and monitoring for threats. Stormwater runoff is one of the greatest contributors to water pollution in the Lowcountry. We have set out to monitor the threat of stormwater pollution by following the problem backwards. We monitor outfall pipes and stormwater systems, identify the types of pollution present, and determine the source. This approach allows us to target our outreach to speciiic behaviors and actions on land.

5 Why Get Involved: In three short years, Charleston Waterkeeper has grown from an ambitious idea into an effective and respected organization working to protect the public s right to clean water. Through creative campaigns, innovative programs, and original events, we have created a loyal grassroots constituency consisting of a community held together by one common thread: an unwavering dedication to its waterways.
