ECOWAS Observatory for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Accurate knowledge on existing and planned resources is vital for strategic planning and development. The non-availability of reliable and updated information about the energy sector poses a major constraint for policy makers, investors and project developers in the ECOWAS energy sector ECOWREX is a web-based platform, aimed at addressing knowledge and information barriers in the ECOWAS region

Background In 2012, ECREEE in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and support from the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), under the GEF project "Promoting Coordination, Coherence and Knowledge Management under Energy Component of the Strategic Program for West Africa", established ECOWREX, which was adopted by the ECOWAS Energy Ministers in October 31st, at its 11th meeting, in Accra, Ghana

ECOWREX provides decision makers, project developers, investors and other stakeholders with tailored energy information and planning tool, aimed at boosting knowledge, creating awareness, and networking, thus, acting as a catalyst for development in the energy sector in West Africa I M P A C T Supporting decision makers with evidence-based decision system. Building a Spatial Data Infrastrcture (SDI), Geospatial technology helps to visualize and analyze where and when an energy system can be deployed. Promoting investment in RE & EE, by providing the data and tools necessary for planning and preliminary survey. Contributing towards harnessing Renewable Energy (RE) resources through identification and mapping of the resource potential. Closing the energy data gap in the region, by supporting the member states with data collection. Promote standardization of data collection models, systems and processes..the success of ECOWREX project is determined by the timely acquisition and uploading of accurate data

ECOWREX consists of different sections that allow users to easily find the data and information available by country: Country Profile with yearly data about the energy sector

GIS Framework provides basic functionalities to visualize and analyze spatial data, combining human activities, infrastructure and resources, which help us to define where and when specific energy technologies can be deployed

Analysis and Trends, to examine and predict the pattern of development of the energy indicators SECTIONS AVAILABLE List of Indicators; Make your analysis: build your own reports in different formats, including tabular data, pdf and charts; Chart creator: compare the 15 ECOWAS countries and follow changes and trends on the energy sector

Explore, to discover relevant information and resources. The section contains a collection of database information searchable by independent categories EXPLORE: RE&EE INITIATIVES PROJECTS STAKEHOLDERS POWER PLANTS DOCUMENTS A user friendly and interactive library with an extensive collection of documents and information about the energy sector.

ECOWREX Statistics at a glance Electricity Access in ECOWAS Member States, 2014

Installed Hydropower capacity (>30MW), 2014 Installed Renewable Capacity (MW), 2014

Installed Grid-Connected Solar PV and Biomass Capacity, Top 2 ECOWAS Countries, 2014

Installed Grid-Connected Wind Capacity, Top 2 ECOWAS countries, 2014

PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES ECREEE is implementing the ACP-EU project: Promoting Sustainable Energy Access through the use of Geospatial Technologies in West Africa (ECOWREX 2) Objectives: Addressing knowledge and information barriers Support towards increasing energy access Financed by the EU Implemented by the ACP Secretariat ACP S&T II, GRANT FED/2013/

Outcomes: Building a Spatial Data Infrastructure Enhanced solar and wind resources maps for West Africa Promoting knowledge of geospatial technology for energy planning Develop IntiGIS 2.0 Software for planning towards improving energy access Develop ratio map of energy consumption and green energy potential in West Africa Find more!! We are working to create a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI), to extend the value and use of the datasets. Compliant to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards, the GIS framework will integrate different web services, create synergies with the global geospatial communities and initiatives, and optimize the effort in terms of geospatial data discovery and access

GIS Mapping of Hydropower (HP) resources in West Africa. ECREEE is implementing a comprehensive modelling of HP potentials based on all the available discharge and precipitation data for the whole region. All results will be integrated into ECOWREX Find more!!
