3 Lands End Coastal Trail ~ San Francisco Golden Gate National Parks Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy Golden Gate National Recreation Area An estimated one million annual visitors use the Lands End Coastal Trail in northwestern San Francisco. The dramatic coastal scenery and wild nature make this a world-class destination. On clear days views include the Farallon Islands, Point Reyes, the Marin Headlands and the Golden Gate entry to San Francisco Bay. Passing ships, fishing boats and sailboats add to the enjoyment. The long-term goal of the National Park Service to improve trailhead, trails and overlooks was realized with a private fund raising effort led by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement, the environmentally friendly pavement surfacing originally developed by SSPCo in response to a National Park Service request, achieves one of its highest value uses at this site. Visitors using this trail regularly comment that these accessible surfaces are so natural that they did not realize they were actually on a paved surface.

(SSPCo) took on the mission to develop an effective pavement product that would provide a green technology and attractive natural aesthetic. Today that goal has been realized. SSPCo s NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement not only meets but it exceeds the performance of hot mix asphalt in pavement materials testing. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures are cold applied (eliminating the usual fossil fuel use and toxic air emissions of hot mix asphalt production), but they are constructed like hot mix asphalt pavements. Paving machines are typically used for placement, and asphalt rollers for compaction. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement surfaces retain the natural appearance of the aggregate used in their formulation, so they can be constructed in a variety of colorations. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement mixtures are commonly formulated with light colored aggregate materials and consequently have a high solar reflectance similar to new concrete pavements. The difference in pavement surface temperatures between heat absorbing asphalt and highly reflective NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement can be significant during warmer weather conditions. NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement has also been tested for thermal resistance and outperformed both asphalt and concrete pavements. In combination with high solar reflectance, this advantage makes NaturalPAVE XL Resin Pavement the standard for cool pavement technology.
