Geothermal Alliance of IL ComEd trade ally event January 9 and 11, 2018

U.S. Underground Temperatures

The Earth is a Source of Heat in Winter Outdoor air temperature: 5 F 72 F Geothermal heat pumps transfer underground heat into the building to provide heating 62 F

and an Efficient Place to Reject Heat in the Summer Outdoor air temperature: 100 F 72 F Geothermal heat pumps transfer heat from the building to the earth to provide cooling 62 F

Geothermal is not new technology

Geothermal is not new technology

A simple explanation of geothermal technology

Free Energy Geothermal Heat Pumps use only a small amount of energy to capture a large amount of FREE energy from the earth.

Geothermal Performance Comparison Cooling Efficiency (EER) New Geothermal Unit 20 Previous Geothermal Unit 15 High Efficiency AC or Heat Pump 10Ordinary Air Conditioner or Heat Pump 5 0

Geothermal Performance Comparison Heating Efficiency (COP) New Geothermal Unit Previous Geothermal Unit Heat Pump High Efficiency Gas/Propane Furnace Ordinary Gas/Propane Furnace

Vertical Loop

Use drilling rig like ones used for water well drilling. Vertical Loop Drilling

This is what construction looks like

Vertical bore without backfill

Vertical Loop/Grouted Geothermal pipe Bentonite Grout backfill

Newest Technology Variable Speed ECM Blowers Variable Speed Compressors - Inverters Variable Speed ECM Loop Pumps 100% DHW with smart tank and 2 nd HEX EER 5.3 COP

Essential first step is calculating loads After a site visit, one of the first step would be to begin developing a site plan Next, determine the building loads Accurate heat loss calculations are essential to designing a GSHP system

Heating & Cooling Loads Never use Rules of Thumbs for final Design such as sq. ft./ton or BTU/Sq. Ft. Use an HVAC Load Program for final Design; Manual J for Residential Loads Manual N for Commercial Loads

Installation this is a classic retrofit in old home.

ComEd residential geothermal incentive. $1,000 per ton of installed heat pump unit, to a maximum of $6,000 per home owner.

GAOI Accreditation and ComEd GAOI and ComEd have collaborated to develop a geothermal heat pump incentive program. As part of the program, to insure quality installations, ComEd network contractors must have at least one individual who has successfully completed the GAOI installation exam and the contractor must be a current member of GAOI.

GAOI Accreditation Program The GAOI has a testing program for Installation, Service Technicians, Loop Installation and Design. GAOI member employees can take the tests and, upon passing, are recognized for their accomplishment. When 75 percent of a company s geothermal professionals have passed the Installation and Service tests, the company is considered a GAOI accredited Installation and/or Service company a recognition of excellence.

GAOI training and testing February 6-7 at Local 23 Pipefitters training center in Rockford (near airport) ComEd will pay 80 percent, or $400 of registration fee, for contractors in the ComEd network. Participants get new IGSHPA geothermal installation manual ($150 value). Registration at
