5 LEARNING OBJECTIVES: THE EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOME IS THAT THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: 1.1 Use of the Metric System in Aquaculture List the various metric units commonly used in an aquaculture setting. Define the metric prefixes micro, milli, centi, deci, deca, hecto, kilo, mega, giga and tera. Identify those metric prefixes most commonly used in aquaculture related values. Perform basic calculations to convert between metric units. Convert between metric and imperial units of mass/ weight. Convert between metric and imperial units of distance. 1.2 Relationship Between Fractions and Percentages Convert fractions to percentages. 1.3 Calculating Means Calculate the arithmetic mean for a set of numbers. 1.4 Significant Figure Use Define the term significant figure. Identify the number of significant figures in a variety of non-decimal containing numbers. Identify the number of significant figures in a variety of decimal containing numbers. Report the appropriate number of significant figures when numbers are added or subtracted. Report the appropriate number of significant figures when numbers are multiplied or divided. 2.1 Volume Calculate the volume of a rectangular tank/ cage. Calculate the volume of a cylindrical tank/ cage. 2.2 Mass Calculate the average mass of a group of individually weighed animals. Define biomass. Calculate the total biomass of a cage/ tank given the number of animals and their average mass. Calculate the number of tanks/ cages required to contain a given quantity of biomass. 2.3 Density Define the terms rearing density and stocking density. Calculate the rearing/ stocking density of a tank/ cage given the number of animals, their average mass and the rearing volume. 2.4 Change in Numbers of Animals List the variety of ways the numbers of fish in a cage/ tank can change (increase or decrease) during the production cycle. Calculate percentage mortality for a given time period. Calculate cumulative mortality for a given time period. 2.5 Feeding Calculate the total feed quantity to deliver when provided a recommended feeding rate and tank/ cage biomass,

6 Forecast the quantity of feed required for a given time period. Differentiate between the terms feed conversion ratio and feed conversion efficiency. Calculate feed conversion ratio and feed conversion efficiency for a given time period. 2.6 Growth Forecast fish size using a variety of growth equations. Define specific growth rate. Calculate specific growth rate for a given time period. 2.7 Distance, Time and Speed Determine a straight-line distance from a nautical chart. Calculate speed given distance and time. Calculate distance given speed and time. Calculate the time needed to travel a distance given the speed. 2.8 Water Quality Calculate the oxygen concentration (mg/1) of sea water given water temperature, salinity and oxygen saturation. Calculate the oxygen content (mg/1) of freshwater given water temperature and oxygen saturation. Calculate the oxygen saturation of sea water given water temperature, salinity and oxygen concentration (mg/l). Calculate the oxygen saturation of freshwater given water temperature and oxygen concentration. 2.9 Water Flow Calculate water flow using a stopwatch and bucket. Calculate water flow for an open channel Chemical Administration Calculate chemical administration quantities for a static bath. Calculate chemical administration quantities for a flow through arrangement using a constant flow device. Calculate chemical administration quantities for a flush treatment. Calculate the amount of antibiotic to add into a feed mixture based upon the prescribed dosage.
