OUR POWER: LOCAL GENERATION How it all started Why interfere in the energy market? Issues & challenges What will OP do? Generation & networks The Insch model RSLs as aggregators

Fuel Poverty Over 27% live in fuel poverty compared to 13.4% in 2002 Lower income households tend to pay more per unit than higher income households Pre-payment meter customers typically pay a premium of over 10% Over the last two years 25% of UK households were incorrectly billed by their energy supplier

We challenge government at local authority, Scottish and UK levels to engage meaningfully with those in poverty around developing alternative energy sources and a not-for-profit energy supplier Turning up the Volume on Poverty Poverty Truth Commission Scotland June 2014

What are we hoping to achieve? Reduce fuel poverty Address market inequities Deliver excellent service Socialise the benefits of renewable energy generation

Our Power Business Model Licensed supplier of gas and electricity and supplier of heat Owned and controlled by social housing providers and other community controlled organisations Shareholding through membership Targeting tenants and others in fuel poverty Non profit distributing and social enterprise Robust business model profitable Create our own integrated supply chain with generation capacity

Our Power: Group Structure

And what will we offer? At market entry: 9% Reduction on standard tariffs of (typically 100 per customer); Further savings to customer through smart meters ( per year in more efficient use of energy) Improved payment methods & convenience (no stigma for use of prepayment ) using Pay-As-You-Go technology

Our Power and Communities IN DEVELOPMENT Can it support opportunities for local and integrated energy use? Private wires and networks Combine technologies, fuel cells, renewables? Democratisation of power locally accountable energy generation and distribution? Can Our Power address geographical discrimination in the Highlands and Islands? One grid fee for Scotland? A vehicle for aggregation?

(1) Potential Collaboration Energizing Insch & Our Power Off gas grid, high levels of fuel poverty Village demand: a cottage hospital, sheltered housing, social housing (existing and planned), sports centre, light industry, and domestic need. Village ambition: three consented wind sites, planned biomass CHP, planned AD, planned PV. Private wire and heat distribution network (see Feldheim nr Berlin) Our Power has supply license and systems Made case for SG support, for model to be used all over Scotland

(2) Our Power and Aggregation Problems: constrained sites, domestic scale local generation, efficiency of renewables. Can Our Power & its members provide solution: Aggregate micro-generation; Aggregate demand; Micro-storage and communications technology. Benefits to members & customers: Offset constraints on generation Use peaks in generation to lower price Store heat (thermal battery) & energy in houses Increases profitability of Fuel Cells, etc. Our Power supply co. facilitates arrangement
