2 Armstrong Policy & Initiatives Did You Know... Armstrong helped pioneer green practices from as early as Our commitment to environmentally-preferable products and programmes began more than a hundred years ago when the company developed a process to recycle cork scrap. Armstrong Ceilings contain up to 77% recycled content. We have the broadest portfolio of ceilings with high recycled content. Armstrong suspension systems contain 30% recycled content the highest percentage of post consumer content in the industry. Armstrong recognises the importance of protecting the environment and using resources intelligently. We are committed to exercising environmental stewardship in our dealings with customers, employees, government, and community neighbours, and in meeting an obligation to future generations. Australia and New Zealand Armstrong is proud to be a member of the GBCA and contributor to the development of Green Star Tools through the stakeholder feedback and technical consultation. The environmental attributes of Armstrong ceiling products have been assessed by Ecospecifier and classified as eco and health preferable and likely to contribute to the achievement of Green Star TM credit points. Armstrong ceiling products are currently being reviewed by Ecospecifer in accordance with their Green Tag TM Green Rate Certification program, recognized by the GBCA. Green Tag certified products ensure compliance to the Green Star TM Materials Calculator. Environmental Credentials Armstrong is the largest manufacturer and supplier of acoustical ceiling systems with strong environmental credentials. These include: Global manufacturing facilities certified to ISO 9001 and ISO Armstrong products and programmes help clients to earn LEED credits in sustainable design in the USA. Armstrong is a founding member of the US Green Building Council. Armstrong s Corporate HQ in the USA has been awarded the U.S. Green Building Council s Platinum Certification under the LEED-EB rating system (equal to Six Green Stars). The LEED Certification Mark is a registered trademark owned by the U.S. Green Building Council and is used with permission. In the UK, Armstrong has been awarded the BRE s A-Rating in the Green Guide to Specification. Armstrong has achieved the highest LCA specification, compliant with ISO

3 The Armstrong Ceiling Recycling Programme Post consumer recycling programme (End of life) Not only are Armstrong ceiling panels produced from recycled material, they are fully recyclable! Armstrong s Ceiling to Ceiling Recycling Programme has recovered and recycled more than ten million square metres of ceilings since 1999 and is now available in Australia*. Reclaim Recycle Reduce.. Armstrong ceiling panels and select other mineral fibre ceiling products may be taken back (Reclaimed) at the end of their useful lifecycle, recycled at an Armstrong plant, thus reducing solid waste in landfills, preserving natural resources, energy and water. * conditions apply Ceiling Tile Recycle Case Study 530 Collins Street, Melbourne GPT, the owner of 530 Collins St is a leader in environmental sustainability and committed to waste and resource management. In keeping with this commitment and as part of the overall renovation project, GPT became the first Australian customer to sign up to Armstrong s Ceiling To Ceiling Recycling Program, generating the following environmental benefits: 1. 63,400kg CO2 equivalent greenhouse gas emissions avoided ,300 kwh energy saved kilo litres of potable water saved tonnes of virgin raw material saved tonnes of material diverted from landfill Did You Know... In 1999, Armstrong Ceilings in the United States introduced the industry s first ceiling recycling programme. To date, worldwide, we have recycled over 10 million m 2 of old ceiling material. That s more than 50,000 tonnes of construction waste that s been diverted from landfills. With Armstrong recycling the old ceiling panels, GPT has achieved an impressive overall recycling rate of more than 90% of demolition materials. Nearly 30,000 m of old ceiling tiles were removed from the 530 Collins St site and shipped to Armstrong s St Helens plant where they were used in the manufacture of new acoustical ceilings. Following the recycling process, GPT ordered new Armstrong DUNE MAX (high acoustic) ceiling panels and PeakForm Suspension Grid, both of which have high recycled content and contribute to IEQ. 4 Sustainable Products & Design Environmental Attributes of Armstrong Ceiling Products The high recycled content of Armstrong ceilings reduces demand on virgin raw materials, increases resource efficiency and diverts waste from landfills. Acoustical performance: An Armstrong ceiling reduces unwanted noise and lowers reverberation time, assisting in compliance to AS2107:2000 and Green Star IEQ. Low VOC and Formaldehyde emission levels help to reduce the harmful effect that materials can have on indoor air quality. (Tested by CETEC and Berkeley Laboratories to satisfy Green Star IEQ). Dematerialisation: Acoustic and durability performance achieved with approximately 40% less raw materials compared to high density panels. High light reflective Armstrong Ceilings can contribute to savings in both lighting and HVAC energy (data available upon request). Ceiling panels and grid systems are modular and can be disassembled and re-used. 30 Year Performance Guarantee ensures longevity and low lifecycle costs. 5 Armstrong Ceilings Commitment in Australia Contribution to Green Rating Tools Armstrong Ceilings verified by Ecospecifier as Eco-preferable The Ecospecifier Verified Product Program offers assurance that verified products are eco and health-preferred, and guarantees that all key manufacturer health and environmental claims are third party verified and assessed in a rigorous, scientific manner using a Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) analysis. Verified Products: Armstrong BIOGUARD Acoustic, DUNE, FINE FISSURED and ULTIMA are included in the Ecospecifier Verified Products online database. Green Rating Information: According to Ecospecifier, Armstrong Verified products may contribute credits to the following Green Star and NABES Rating Tools: Note: The Verified Listing data does not represent compliance to the Green Star Materials Criteria, rather is a Technical Opinion by Ecospecifier.
