1 RamWass Integrated decisin supprt system fr risk assessment and management f the water-sediment-sil system at river basin scale in fluvial ecsystems Dcument Name: Third Peridic Activity Reprt (Publishable Executive Summary) Perid Cvered: September 1 st, 2008 February 28 th, 2009 Dcument Date: April 6 th, 2009 Start Date f Prject: September 1 st, 2006 Duratin: 30 mnths Prject Crdinatr: Gilbert Peffer CIMNE Instrument: Thematic Pririty: STREP Glbal Change and Ecsystems

2 Publishable Executive Summary Prject Objectives Glbal change and human activities can exert severe impacts n the eclgy f aquatic and wetland ecsystems adjacent t a river basin area, influencing in sme cases the life f many human beings. The devastating impacts f recent severe cntaminatin accidents in relevant fluvial ecsystems (such as the Aznalcóllar mine dam failure and spill in the Dñana marshes adjacent t the Guadalquivir river estuary in Spain n 1998) have sparked interest in the water-sediment-sil mdeling in fluvial ecsystems wrldwide. There is a need fr efficient methds and tls t assist public administratrs and emergency services in the risk assessment f the water-sediment-sil (WASS) system in fluvial ecsystems and in the management f different preventin, mitigatin and remediatin scenaris. Mdern day satellite infrmatin n the land surface prperties and mete prcesses, cmbined with n-site infrmatin frm state f the art sensrs, are the basis fr reginal-scale envirnmental mdelling. As part f the current mdelling effrt, maps f the hydrlgic prperties f the sils f the regin can be develped using databases ppulated with data frm n-site sensrs. Such maps can be used with prcess-based mdels f the land surface t prvide infrmatin t decisin makers regarding the hydrdynamics f the ecsystems, the ersin and cmpactin levels, the filter and transprt functins f sils, the water quality and the verall eclgical impact f hazards. This infrmatin is crucial fr the design f efficient preventin, mitigatin and remediatin scenaris. The bjective f the prject is t develp and validate a new decisin supprt system (DSS) fr the risk assessment and management fr the preventin and/r reductin f the negative impacts caused by human activities n the water/sediment/sil system at river basin scale in fluvial ecsystems. The DSS will cmbine and integrate envirnmental and ge-physical data frm earth bservatin systems, n-site sensrs and ge-referenced infrmatin, advanced cmputer simulatin and artificial intelligence tls fr generating Advanced cmputer simulatin knwledge GID cntributing t the assessment f the eclgical impact and the design f effective respnse actins maximising the integrity and safety f the ecsystem human life. and Inf Gathering Cmbinatin f integratin f envirnmental and gephysical data frm earth bservatin systems Use in-situ sensrs and ge-referenced MODELS ANN Training Fllwing the successful WEB integratin f the Dcument Repsitry Simulatin Examples Graphical visualizatin Artificial intelligence RamWass DSS, a Virtual Dems methds Map tls ANN crucial activity f the prject will be Database Visualizer Analysis the in-depth calibratin, validatin and assessment f the perfrmance, scalability and effectiveness f the DSS in its applicatin t three relevant fluvial ecsystems adjacent t imprtant river basins in Eurpe: The marsh area f Dñana in Spain D8 Third Peridic Activity Reprt 2

Crdinatr cntact details The crdinatr f the RamWass prject is Gilbert Peffer. His cntact details are: Gilbert Peffer Internatinal Centre fr Numerical Methds in Engineering (CIMNE) Building C1 - Nrth Campus UPC Gran Capità s/n Barcelna, Spain Tel: Fax: gilbert@cimne.upc.edu Third Year Achievements The bjectives and the achievements f the RamWass prject fr the last semester can be summarised as fllws: Validatin f cmputer cdes fr hazard simulatin. Partners have finished the validatin f the cmputer simulatin cdes implemented during the previus perids UPC has cmpleted the validatin f the upgrades dne t CARPA, their hydraulic simulatin mdel. This validatin has fcused n the wind actin it is an imprtant factr in the hydraulic mdelling f Dñana marshes, since the wind stress n free surfaces can prduce large displacements, the infiltratin and evapratin lsses, and the mdelling f rainfall inflws. The results f the numerical simulatins have been validated by cmparisn with the n-site data and remte sensing images. LUH has finished the validatin f the depth-averaged tw-dimensinal mdel fr calculating sediment transprt in channels. The key prblem in the Elbe basin is that frequent high waters have resuspended high amunts f sediments and transprted them t inundatin areas, thus leading t cntaminatin f large areas with txic cmpunds like heavy metals and persistent rganic pllutants. The validatin has fcused n the simulatin f water discharge, water level and pllutin transprt in a lwer middle river sectin f the Elbe river. CISM has validated the upgrades dne t PLASCON3D, their gemechanical finite element simulatin cde, which deal with elastic and elastic-plastic analysis f subsidence at reginal scale. The Italian partners have recnstructed the P Delta stratigraphy and have cllected the main getechnical data, and PLASCON3D has been successfully calibrated against bth elastic cmpactin and subsidence analyses. Enhancement f RamWass DSS On the basis f the validatin results btained by partners, nly minr enhancements have been identified t be dne in the RamWass DSS. The enhancements have mainly fcused n the virtual database, called RamWipedia, that had already been set up in the previus year. The virtual database can be accessed thrugh the prject website r using the link In the last semester partners have cmpleted the infrmatin related t the three test sites (e.g. infrmatin n D8 Third Peridic Activity Reprt 4

5 the area, the available data, the regulatins, etc.). Mrever, during the RamWass prject, German partners have develped a case-based reasning apprach in cllabratin with Vlggrad State Technical University t supprt decisin-making in the Elbe riverland. Elabratin f guidelines fr risk management in fluvial ecsystems The experience gained in the develpment and validatin f the RamWass DSS has been used t establish a set f pre-standardisatin rules and recmmendatins fr risk assessment f hazards in fluvial ecsystems. These guidelines prvide an verview n hazards in fluvial ecsystems and the related preventin, mitigatin and remediatin measures. The dcument describes the basic cmpnents f RamWass DSS such as the digital terrain mdels, cre mdels, GiD, sil cntaminatin predictin frmulas, the Artificial Neural Netwrk, r the Case-based Reasning mdule. The guidelines explain mrever the strategy fr updating the different RamWass DSS databases and describe hw t develp the mdules in the future. Disseminatin activities During the last prject mnths, partners have published several press releases, have participated in different cnferences and have submitted publicatins and psters, where the results f the RamWass prject have been presented t a wide spectrum f audiences. Mrever, partners have peridically updated the prject website ( since it is the surce f the mst up-t-date te infrmatin abut the prject. It links t the RamWipedia and the dcument manager area fr partners, and gives users free access t the RamWass DSS and t dems n the simulatins in the three test sites. D8 Third Peridic Activity Reprt 5
