2 A Tradition of Water Quality... Aeration Industries International, Inc. is recognized as a leader in the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. In addition, the company also serves the aquaculture industry, revitalizes lakes, rivers and harbors, and is widely used for the improvement of golf course water quality. The company was cofounded in 1974 by the late Joseph Durda and current CEO and president, Daniel Durda. Aeration Industries overwhelming success is due in part to the company s flagship product, the patented surface-mounted aspirating aerator, refined by more than a quarter of a century of research and development. Constantly perfecting the aerator, Aeration Industries invests in and maintains an active R & D program. The research facility has state of the art capability and is monitored by computerized instrumentation capable of simultaneously controlling and measuring numerous operating systems. The focal point of the R & D center is a 100,000 gallon (378 m 3 ) test pool facility, the only such facility in the industry. The test pool features more than 18 feet (5.5 m) of windows positioned below the waterline designed for close underwater observation of aeration equipment. The below-water view offers researchers and water quality professionals a rare look at the underwater Journey of Discovery of aeration equipment and systems.

3 Theory of Operation... The operates by creating a partial vacuum under the water, drawing air through the shaft, and dispersing the oxygen into the water in a horizontal direction. As the ELECTRIC MOTOR (W/WIRING TERMINAL BOX) propeller rotates, it induces a flow of atmospheric oxygen through the air intake ports on the shaft located above the water surface. This air is then drawn through the shaft, past the propeller, and exits in a high velocity stream of fine bubbles as it is diffused into the water. The average bubble size produced is approximately 2.0 millimeters, and meets the optimum size of 2.2 millimeters established by the U.S. EPA for fine bubble diffused air systems. Oxygen is transferred to the water and biomass during the contact time with the fine bubbles. The combination of the s unique propeller design and horizontal mixing produces total oxygen dispersion, optimizing the wastewater treatment process. 4 Oxygen Dispersion the Key to Efficient Oxygen Transfer... In the treatment of wastewater, an aeration system is ineffective in providing a complete and uniform transfer of oxygen without the capability to disperse oxygen throughout the whole basin. Although there are many systems designed to aerate wastewater, none are as effective in uniform oxygen dispersion as the aeration system. Typical aeration systems such as diffused air, surface splashers, and rotors have limited areas of influence, causing short-circuiting, dead zones, and only partial aeration. Because the produces a horizontal and circular flow pattern, it provides whole basin circulation. The mixing creates a high velocity horizontal stream of oxygen which literally sweeps solids along with it, keeping them in suspension for a more efficient biological treatment. The end result is better treatment of wastewater and higher removal rates of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Suspended Solids. Three Systems Put to the Test... 1.) FLOW-LINKAGE SYSTEM: Utilizing multiple units, a circular horizontal flow pattern is created, covering the whole lagoon area, thus preventing short circuiting and maximizing lagoon volume. The result is a highly oxygenated flow pattern that provides complete mixing of the lagoon, keeps solids suspended in any climate, and maintains optimum temperatures year round. 2.) SURFACE AERATORS: The area of influence for surface splashers is limited and has the additional negative affect of cooling the aeration basin through evaporation. 3.) BLOWER/DIFFUSER SYSTEM: As seen in the photograph, the diameter of influence for a diffuser system is very limited, requiring a large quantity of diffusers to cover the area needed. Much of the area is still snow covered from lack of aeration and mixing, giving the lagoon a pincushion look The Proof is in the Mixing... INTRODUCTION OF DYE 8 MINUTES LATER AFTER 16 MINUTES CUTAWAY VIEW OF UNDERWATER AIR STREAM WINTER AERIAL PHOTO 32 MINUTES - COMPLETE MIX SPLASHER - AFTER 80 MINUTES With the system, a horizontal circular flow pattern is created and controlled for maximum treatment efficiency. The only resistance which the water flow must overcome is inertia. Once inertia is overcome, minimal energy consumption is needed to maintain flow velocities. The horizontal mixing capability and flow pattern is clearly demonstrated in tests conducted by Auburn University. Salt and dye were injected into a pond equipped with a single unit. The flow pattern of the dye as seen in the photographs above illustrate the dramatic effectiveness of the. Specific conductance tests were also performed by using salt injections to document complete top to bottom, side to side mixing. Complete and uniform mixing is evident top to bottom. In the photographs above and to the right, it is evident that both surface splasher systems and blower/diffuser systems have restricted areas of influence. Due to the induced flow of the aerator, floc-shear is minimized or eliminated, compared to conventional high-speed surface splashers that require the wastewater to be drawn through a volute. FLOW LINKAGE: The Patented system, utilizing its unique flow-linkage process capability, offers high oxygen transfer levels, superior mixing abilities, year-round treatment efficiencies, ease of installation, and minimal maintenance. Multiple Aspirator units synergize to create flow-linkage. This process creates a highly oxygenated flow pattern. Greater oxygen transfer efficiency improves biological treatment resulting in Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) removal rates as high as 99 percent in highly contaminated wastewater. A high velocity flow pattern keeps solids in suspension, increasing removal rates of pollutants. FLOW LINKAGE SURFACE AERATORS: This system pumps water upward and throws it into the air creating a high aerosol environment. The forces of gravity must be overcome in this system which requires more horsepower (higher energy consumption). The sphere of influence is limited and because of the lack of movement, solids quickly accumulate at corners and between units in the basin. DIFFUSER SYSTEMS: Compressed air is introduced through diffusers from the bottom of the basin. More horsepower (higher energy consumption) is required to overcome the water head resistance. Oxygen rises vertically and escapes quickly before effective horizontal dispersion in the water can take place, thus aeration is much less effective, due to lack of mixing. ROTOR SYSTEMS: They are expensive to maintain and are notoriously high in energy consumption and maintenance. Rotor systems propel water into the air creating an aerosol environment which releases offending odors into the air. They are inefficient in suspending solids uniformly. 5 Simplicity in Design... The aerator is a statement of simplicity in itself, offering a horizontal aspirating air system on an easily accessible surface mounted flotation system. Consisting of only a few moving parts, the aerator offers easy installation and requires little maintenance. 1. SEVERE DUTY MOTOR (TEFC) Each motor features a 1.15 service factor, cast iron framing, a B10 bearing life, a gasketed conduit box, and corrosion resistant hardware. 2. HARDWARE Structural frames, fasteners and cabling are offered in galvanized steel as standard equipment or in stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance in severe wastewater environments. 3. MOUNTING FLANGE Made of stainless steel, it supports both the housing and motor for various mounting options. It features an adjustable angle for various water depths and can pivot the aerator out of the water for servicing. 4. HOUSING Made of rugged stainless steel, the housing encloses the rotating drive shaft. Large openings near the top allow atmospheric air to enter into the hollow drive shaft. 5. DRIVE SHAFT (INSIDE HOUSING) The drive shaft is made of stainless steel and uses a universal coupling to maintain alignment. The hollow shaft extends through the housing, with both the propeller and diffuser securely affixed to it. The Shaft is balanced to provide less than 0.2 Inches Per Second (IPS) vibration VORTEX SHIELD A vortex suppressing device is provided as standard equipment. Vortexes are prone to form when a rotating propeller device is operated with minimum submergence. The floating shield prevents vortexes from contacting the propeller, protecting the aerator from shock loads COMPOUND BEARING A fluted water-lubricated bearing is pressed in the lower end of the housing and can be replaced within minutes on location SEVERE DUTY WEAR SLEEVE An environmentally friendly nonmetallic sleeve protects the drive shaft from wear, and is easily field replaceable. 9. PROPELLER Specifically designed for the Aspirator and made with only the highest quality materials, Aeration Industries proprietary propeller is the technological breakthrough that places the aerator far above the competition in quality and performance. Developed with university and naval experts, our propellers are designed specifically for aspirating technology and are not available anywhere else in the world. Although most competitors use propellers that are designed for stationary or propulsion applications, the s propeller has been designed to eliminate cavitation and to promote maximum oxygen transfer while maximizing mixing velocities DIFFUSER Made of stainless steel and geometrically matched to the propeller, the diffuser is designed to provide the greatest differential pressure across the opening for maximum atmospheric air flow, and to produce the optimum bubble size for extended contact time with wastewater. 11. FLOTATION Lightweight, low density UV protected polyethylene shells, foam filled with close-cell polyurethane, provide positive buoyancy to 640 lbs. (290 Kg) per float. 9

6 Applications... OXIDATION OVALS (DITCHES) - The oxidation oval is one of the more popular wastewater treatment systems. The system is especially effective in this type of application because its horizontal mixing pattern compliments the basic design of the oval. Dramatic horsepower and maintenance cost savings result at installations where systems replace older, more cumbersome methods. LAGOONS AND PONDS - Because of its modular design and individual adjustability, the system for lagoons and ponds is uniquely efficient. The Flowlinkage/horizontal flow concept works well in both shallow and deep lagoons. The Aspirator can be positioned to create a directional flow; or, in extremely large bodies of water, can be arranged to develop unidirectional flow patterns in predetermined areas of the lagoon. By control of flow, individual processing cells can be set up in the same aeration basin (hydrostatic baffling). AERATION BASINS AND DIGESTERS - systems can be installed in conventional basins for activated sludge or secondary aerobic sludge digestion. Each aerator can be individually directed to eliminate dead spots and prevent sludge buildup. Surface splasher systems, as evident in the lower-left basin, leave inherent dead spots where solids can accumulate. TANK AERATION - units improve package plant performance with supplemental and spot aeration. Activated sludge plant performance improves through increased aeration and mixing. Portability, adaptability, and serviceability make Aspirators ideal for a wide variety of tank applications.
