8 Pilt Actin: Eclgical aspects f deep-sea mining 11 member cuntries (DE, BE, FR, IT, NL,NO, PL, PT, RO, SE, UK) initiated a jint research prject in Aim Integratin f natinal research activities and jint use f infrastructures. Objectives Analyse the lng-term eclgical impacts f deep-sea mining and devise mnitring strategy. Ultimately, make recmmendatins t plicy-makers, industry and the ISA.

9 EcMining Prject Activities Germany ffered 118 days n the RV Snne fr a jint cruise in the Pacific. Researchers frm 25 institutes jintly studied: Envirnmental status f plymetallic ndule habitats in the DISCOL Area Implicatins fr future ndule mining activities in the CCFZ Scientific Crdinatin GEOMAR Helmhltz Centre fr Ocean Research Kiel Prject duratin Jan December 2017, including 3-legged cruise Budget Apprx. 13.2m (cash 6.2m, 118 ship days, 3.5m in-kind)

12 Fllw-up Actin The EcMining Prject came t an end n 31 st f December st phase was cnducted successfully - hwever, several aspects need t be investigated further: the fate and impact f mining generated particle plumes the definitin f apprpriate indicatrs f ecsystem health and threshld values fr harmful effects measures t mitigate significant adverse effects, an assessment f assciated envirnmental risks implementatin f scientific knwledge int imprved legislatin fr ISA

13 New Call Fr Prpsals On August 1, 2017, several JPI Oceans MS launched a jint call fr prpsals t further study envirnmental impacts and risks assciated with seabed mining. It calls fr cruise prpsals n RV SONNE in early 2019 t be cnducted in the CCFZ Prpsals shuld be linked t an industrial field trial / demnstratin prject f mining equipment in the deep sea. 13 FRIDAY, JUNE 08, 2018

14 Twards a next prject One integrated prpsal was submitted and psitively evaluated Grant Agreements are still being cncluded at natinal level. Prject is scheduled t start n 1 August 2018, with jint cruises n RV SONNE (SO286) frm Feb. 18 t May in the CCFZ Prject will independently study the envirnmnental impacts f a pilt ndule mining test by a Belgian cmpany. Imprtantly, JPI Oceans member cuntries nt funding any mining peratr, but are funding scientists t cnduct independent research n an independent vessel, seeking t deliver independent advice t the ISA. 14 FRIDAY, JUNE 08, 2018
