Expanding Minds and Changing Lives: Smart Collaborative Environmental Stewardship NACUBO Smart and Sustainable Conference March 23, 2010 Peggy Moody, Ph.D., Sustainability Coordinator, St. Louis Community College Dennis Dill, MBA, LEED AP, Manager HVAC and Maintenance, St. Louis Community College Dan Eberle, Director of Missouri Alternative and Renewable Energy and Technology Center, Crowder College PLANNING 1

See the big picture first Incorporate during early design phase Include energy conservation measures (ECMs) Make sure projects are implemented uniformly (e.g., lighting and low flow fixtures). Consider making planning policy so that assures consistent and fair decisions. CREATIVE FINANCING 2

Finding Funding At, we Throw the net far and wide to find solutions for projects Brownfield clean-up monies from EPA and City of STL Utilities rebates ESCos (Energy Saving Companies) offering energy conservation programs with guaranteed savings and paid-from-savings financing options MO-DNR low interest loans for target ECM s Crowder Tax Credit donations Congressional Attention Finding Funding (cont) Crowder A history of high profile high tech vehicle projects increased foundation support TSAR 1984 STAR STAR II

Finding Funding (cont) Crowder Then switched to green building Solar projects Solar Decathlon Decathlon Finding Funding (cont) Collaboration among budgets Green Movies paid for by Student Services monies; Turn it off stickers by Prof Dev monies; Bus to Chicago Green Fair out of president student monies; Meetings between campus students at the Wildwood lab funded by EarthWays Center 4

Finding Funding (cont) Crowder As with everyone Grants Grants Grants DOE, DOL, NSF, Workforce Development, Industry partners Ad infinitum Ad pecunia Finding Funding (cont) Field trips to regional schools to collaborate with their Alternative Energy and LEED building successes (Crowder; Lewis & Clark Community College; Crossroads Prep; The College School) paid for by VCFB 5

REMOVING OBSTACLES Overcoming Barriers Communicate effectively via collaborative means ( , phone, OneNote) during planning, implementing and completion of projects GHG audit utilizing faculty, staff and students; and collaborating with Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) 6

Overcoming Barriers Crowder Go to Meeting electronic communication tool Kill-a-Watt program changing mindset of users.. cut electrical usage by 8% through voluntary compliance (shared some of the savings with participants.important) Overcoming Barriers Saved GHG audit consultation fees (one estimate ~20,000.00) by inputting our own data and using SurveyMonkey Collaboration with LCCC to get strategies for collecting transportation data Engaged student clubs to answer the transportation survey via mass (collaboration with TESS) 7

INTEGRATING PROCESS INTO CURRICULUM Teaching Stewardship At : Wildwood Campus included community input for its initial function; Wildwood used as Lab for curriculum Art students draw wildlife on Nature Trail Find the Sustainable Features game during student orientation 8

Teaching Stewardship Crowder: Began sustainable building program in 1980 Integrated into construction coursework Teaching Stewardship (cont) Team teaching (ALP) Green Fairs Share innovations via BlackBoard, OneNote across the district at Professional Development programs Memos of Understanding for cross-enrollment in Crowder s renewable energy courses. KCFV Radio Student DJs at FV Green Fair 9

Teaching Stewardship (cont) Link general education with environmental sciences and construction majors (USGBC grant) Teaching Stewardship (cont) Crowder MARET work done with solar and wind powered tools and electric and ethanol vehicles Demonstrations on campus 10

EXAMPLES OF COLLABORATION Collaborations in Conservation Paper Conservation Audit --Collaboration with IKON Copiers Please Consider Me [tree picture] Before Printing and Copying Board Agenda printing cut in half saving ~8, Details of trees, waste and water used for printing shared Please consider me when you copy and print. 11

Collaborations (cont) Crowder MOU s with other community colleges to allow access to our degrees remotely. Saves student miles and unnecessary duplication of expensive programs Collaborations (cont) Energy Conservation Turn it Off Project-- Measured over night electricity for computer and copiers at.07 each = /night (7200 computers across the district) Virtualizing TESS storage capacities Lighting retrofits 12

Collaborations (cont) Crowder- Operating 65kW turbine on campus as a net meter unit supporting the MARET Center Funded through local initiative and grants Sending excess back out to the local utility Collaborations (cont) Waste Management District recycling program (one hauler) Composting under consideration Styrofoam dissolver Collection for the Common Good FV student clubs 13

Collaborations (cont) Crowder Bringing landfill gas to campus for boiler and electrical generation Producing ethanol for college flex fuel vehicles from local carbon rich commercial waste Collaborations (cont) Water Conservation Low volume flush valves and fixtures Waterless urinals Sensor faucets Awareness program Please conserve Please conserve for future generations Your co-workers care enough to concerve 14

Collaborations (cont) Crowder & Crowder Alternative Energy Inclusion Collaborating with Crowder College, an area high school plans to enter the Solar Bike Competition Collaborations (cont) USGBC-STL has been awarded the preferred provider for education in the region provides meeting space and program venues sponsor programs CE516 Sustainable Construction has the official endorsement of USGBC - National 15
