3 Introduction Introduction Hydropower presents an opportunity for economic development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, but unlocking private sector resources will be key to deliver on this opportunity. Governments and decision-makers are increasingly turning to renewable resources to spur development and improve livelihoods. To accompany and encourage this change, a larger number of stakeholders must be mobilised and involved, including independent power producers (IPPs), but also social and environmental experts, financiers, international institutions as well as local communities and entrepreneurs. In recent years, private investment in the power sector has continued to grow. This is particularly the case in Africa. Most countries in the region have now IPPs as part of the power generation sector. These IPPs cover a range of technologies from fossil fuels to solar PV, but also hydropower. Hydropower IPPs are now found in East and Southern Africa and a number are under development in West Africa. Hydropower stands out from other types of renewable energy projects, understanding and managing these specificities are key to the success of these projects. This workshop is designed to bring together a community of experienced developers, professionals and experts to explore opportunities and solutions for further hydropower development, in Africa and other parts of the world. 7% Only about seven per cent of the economically feasible hydropower potential of Africa has been developed. In Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Zambia, Ethiopia, Togo and Sudan, hydropower accounts for over 90 per cent of electricity production. 35 GW In 2017, 1,924 MW of hydropower capacity was put into operation. However, the installed capacity of the continent has only reached 35 GW, the equivalent of Norway's, a country 80 times smaller than the continent. Developing independent hydropower projects 3
