Informationsreise Norwegen A Collective View of the Storage Market Christian Brennig Senior Expert Technologies and Standards BVES German Energy Storage Association 17. April 2018, Munich

AGENDA 2 BVES Bundesverband Energiespeicher e.v. Technologies, Market Drivers and Trends Use Cases and Businesscases of Energy Storages in Germany Home Storages Industry Large Scale Storages Outlook

BVES BUNDESVERBAND ENERGIESPEICHER e.v. 3 The BVES is the industrial association of German energy storage companies that is open to all technologies in the areas of electricity, heat and mobility. We are a dialogue partner for politics, administration, science and publicity. With targeted lobbying at the interfaces of political decision making we are trying to improve the German regulation and policy framework. In addition, the BVES monitors research and development activities and informs members of new results and developments.

CLUSTERED HOMESTORAGES 18

INDUSTRIAL STORAGES (MEDIUM VOLTAGE GRID) 19 Growing sector about 600 projects in Germany (agriculture, multi-family houses, trade, industry) Increasing interest through state grands in Thuringia, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Wurttemberg Applications: reducing power purchase, peak shaving, atypical power loads, self-sufficiency, UPS, emergency power Currently: storages in combination with charging infrastructure

AVOIDING PEAK LOADS SAVING COSTS (INDUSTRY) 20 Individual grid fees for companies with an annually power consumption > kwh Maximum annual power peak is price indicator Less load peaks = less energy costs

RELIABLE PROCESSES (INDUSTRY) 21 Applications e.g. in Hospitals and facilities with sensitive production processes Emergency Power

MULTI-USE-APPLICATIONS (INDUSTRY) 22

COMBINING SECTORS (INDUSTRY) 23

NEW TRENDS Power-to-Gas converting surplus energy into sustainable fuel 24 Conversion of 1 MWh electricity into 50 Nm3 of biomethane for grid injection

LARGE SCALE BATTERIES FOR PCR 25 08/2016: ~35 MW 12/2017: ~178 MW 12/2018: ~323 MW

Control reserve Power frequency GRID STABILISATION WITH LARGE SCALE BATTERIES 26 PRL = PCR (Primary Control Reserve) SRL = SCR (Secondary Control Reserve) MRL = MR (Minute Reserve)

STORAGES ARE ALL-ROUNDER 27 Peak load smoothing Black-Start capability Optimization of self-consumption Positive/negative control energy Reactive power compensation Off-grid supply Voltage control Inertia reserve Back up energy Shifting excess energy to other sectors
