Eco-efficiency of consumer products Product Sustainability Assessment challenges, case studies, methodologies Lausanne, July 4/5, 2005 Ina Rüdenauer

What do we mean by Eco-efficiency? Integrated environmental and economic assessment of products and processes from a life cycle perspective Builds on two partial assessments: Environmental assessment: usually life cycle assessment (LCA), according to ISO ff. Life cycle costing (usually: total costs of ownership) Integration: evaluation of effectiveness (reaching the goal!) and evaluation of efficiency (... with little effort!) of product alternatives or measures.

General procedure Definition of goal and scope of the study I ECOLOGY ECONOMY n t e Life Cycle Inventory Life Cycle Costing r p Life Cycle Impact Assessment Weighting and Aggregation Aggregation r e t a t i o Integrated assessment and evaluation n (own figure derived from ISO ff.)

Example: Private Laundry Conducted within project Goal: Optimum focus for a consumer information campaign: promotion of energy-efficient washing machines or improving the way people use their machine (i.e. fuller washing cycles, lower temperatures)? Regarded alternatives (on an annual basis): Average machine + behaviour More efficient machine Optimised behaviour Both: efficient dialogue machine + optimised behaviour

Example: Private Laundry GWP versus Life-cycle costs high env. burden, high costs kg CO2-Equivalents average machine + behaviour efficient machine improved behaviour both (dialogue machine) Low env. burden, low costs Euro

Example: Private Laundry Consequences for information campaign: Information measures regarding washing behaviour Exhibition with DHB (German housewife association) Wash-contest in schools EcoTopTen-criterion for washing machines: feature that supports optimised use of a washing machine: load size indicator + indication on display ( dialogue machine )

Example: Passenger Car Goal: Identification of the most eco-efficient purchase alternative for private consumers. i.e.: best environmental performance for reasonable price Shown alternatives: Skoda Fabia Combi 1.4 Toyota Prius (Hybrid) Ford Focus Turnier 1.6 VW Golf Variant

Short description of the system funcional unit: one year travelling ( km) with a privately owned car geographical scope: Germany vehicle class: family cars holding period: 4 years

Environmental assessment Possible indicators: Fuel consumption (use phase)? Primary energy consumption? Global warming potential? Own single indicator (EcoGrade)? In Germany best environmental ranking of passenger cars is the VCD Auto-Umweltliste. Considers: Global warming potential (40 %) Noise (20 %) Pollutants (cancerogenic and other substances) (40 %)

Environmental assessment VCD points 10 points = best 10 0 points = worst ,30 5,68 6,48 6,50 VW Ford Toyota Skoda EcoTopTen-Criteria: at least 6,45 VCD-points (score of recommended cars by VCD) particle filter

Life cycle costing p.a Cost structure of passenger cars repairs, tyres running costs fixed costs acquisition costs 0 VW Ford Toyota Skoda

Integrated evaluation VCD points versus life cycle costs Minimum criterion 0 Skoda Fabia 1.4 Combi VCD-points Ford Focus 1.6 Turnier Toyota Prius (Hybrid) VW Golf 1.4 Variant Euro

Ranking Passenger Cars Easier communication with clear single score: ETT-Points = mean value of VCD-points + Cost-points Cost-points: Price of most costly ETT-car = 0 points = worst case Price of cheapest ETT-car = 10 points = best case

Ranking Passenger Cars

Cross comparison product groups In EcoTopTen different product groups were compared regarding absolute saving potential (effectiveness)?... costs per saved unit (efficiency)? Ranking (plus additional information on restricitions): Setting of priorities!
