Notice: Commission discussion and possible action may occur during any Commissioner Meeting. The following sections of the Agenda are always subject to such discussion and possible action without further motion by the Commission: Changes to the Agenda, Public Hearings, Old Business, and New Business. The public is advised that members of the Town Commission may be in attendance and participate in proceedings of the board. 6 One useful applied definition for city sustainability: A measurement-based approach to identify best practices and indicators to optimally manage Social, Natural and Economic assets. - Recognize externalities = off-the-book costs of decisions that are not evaluated beyond 1-5 years out. 24 Satellite Beach: Has the City considered creating a Green Committee? Ad-Hoc Green Committee in Many, many ideas, incl. seeking FIT to begin work on a City S Plan. Formal Sustainability Board in S Action Plan delivered in Spring members, with a waiting list. Board member now on City Council. 24

25 Smart things the City did: Gave the S Board a limited budget for projects. Focused on specific, tractable tasks. Tapped the creative minds of students and citizens. Staffed the S Board with a decision maker, someone with the authority to make decisions. Partnered with regional agencies (Brevard Zoo, Keep Brevard Beautiful, Brevard IRL Coalition, IRL NEP). Continuing to ensure that the message and goals of Sustainability permeate City operations. 25

28 Creating a Sustainability Action Plan Sustainability Action Plans are vital to a sustainable, financially responsible, and resilient future Basic goal: create user friendly Sustainability Action Plan that sets meaningful and measureable targets for the City to follow to lead by example into the 21 st century Use Action in title 28

29 Five Primary Sustainability Categories: - Built Environment - Land and Water Systems - Energy and Transportation - Community Outreach - Quality of Life Indicators within each inform action plan initiatives Allows identification of a hierarchical structure of indicators/measurements to create checkpoints to ensure quality control. 29

38 What Can S Boards Do? Lagoon Friendly Gardening Reduce fertilizer and sediment run-off into the lagoon.... Lever existing resources with existing Tree or Beautification Boards. Move forward on smart certification programs such as the KBB Lagoon Friendly Lawn Program and the MRC Green Business Program. Rethink landscapes with local businesses Rethink landscapes with local schools 38

42 These findings suggest: We probably do not want to miss opportunities to use sustainability boards to improve city performance on major issues: water and land use, energy, transportation, socio-economic performance, etc. We appear to be in a position to accelerate the achievement of many logical goals - based on what citizens decide. 42
