1 Galston and Glenorie Wastewater Scheme Community update - August 2014 Sydney Water will provide a new wastewater service to Galston and Glenorie by 30 June About the scheme The Galston and Glenorie Wastewater Scheme is part of the NSW Government s Priority Sewerage Program (PSP), which aims to improve wastewater services to unsewered urban villages. The scheme will be a pressure sewerage system that transfers wastewater from the villages of Galston and Glenorie to the existing West Hornsby system in Dural. Pressure sewerage systems work by collecting wastewater in a small tank installed on individual eligible properties. A pump inside the tank grinds the wastewater and pumps it to a network of pipes in the street. Sydney Water expects to start construction in September 2014, with most of the work to be finished by June The map above shows an overall plan of the new scheme and new infrastructure Galston and Glenorie Wastewater Scheme Community update August 2014 SW36 7/14 Page 1

2 Scheme benefits Reduced public health risks from poorly performing on-site systems. Fewer odours from on-site systems and pump-out trucks. Reduced environmental impacts to local waterways. Cost savings for properties with pump-out systems or systems needing high maintenance. Removing dampness and seepage in private properties and public areas. The opportunity for eligible property owners to remove on-site systems and use a reliable wastewater system owned and maintained by Sydney Water. The opportunity to re-use existing on-site systems to collect storm water, subject to council approval. 3 The map above shows the area in Glenorie serviced by the new scheme Serviced areas All residential properties. After this time, property owners wanting to connect must purchase and install their own equipment. Other properties with wastewater flows equal to typical residential flows (excluding industrial zoned properties) that do not produce trade waste and are less than 0.4 ha. Where properties have mixed residential and commercial use, they will be eligible to receive the equipment if they do not produce trade waste and are less than 0.4 ha. Sydney Water will supply and install the necessary equipment on properties at no cost to eligible property owners for 12 months from the date customers are advised they can connect to the Galston and Glenorie Wastewater Scheme. Properties within the serviced area that don t meet the above requirements may be provided with a point of connection, but owners will need to pay for the necessary equipment on their properties. 4 On-property equipment Once the property owner commits to connecting to the system, Sydney Water will install four pieces of equipment on each eligible property, including: a collection tank with grinder pump a discharge pipe an alarm/control panel a boundary kit (also known as a property connection point). In most cases, Sydney Water will own this equipment and continue to maintain it once it is installed and connected to the system. Connection All property owners who wish to connect must pay the cost of: connecting their property drainage to the on-property equipment plumbing or electrical upgrades that may be required decommissioning existing systems ongoing electricity and wastewater service fees, once connected. Connection costs will vary for each property owner. You will get more information about connecting to the new wastewater scheme and the costs involved, as the project progresses. 5 If you have not met with us, please call to make an appointment. If you have already met with us and you want to connect to the new wastewater system, you must sign and return the Consent to enter and Pressure sewerage system agreement forms that we provided at your customer home plan meeting as soon as possible. Without a signed agreement, Sydney Water will only provide you with a boundary kit (point of connection). If you have already met with us and returned the signed documents, you must notify us of any changes since our meeting that may affect our agreement with you and work to be done at your property (these include changes in property ownership, property development, access and timing issues). Other scheme assets Part of the scheme includes constructing: two new wastewater pumping stations, one in each village a number of air release facilities to allow air to flow in and out of the system about 11 km of reticulation pipelines in the streets within the serviced areas to connect individual properties to the new wastewater pumping stations about 13 km of transfer pipelines to connect Glenorie to Galston (via Old Northern Road and Mid Dural Road) then from Galston to the West Hornsby wastewater system in Dural (via Galston Road, Old Northern Road and New Line Road). 6 Talking to the community New infrastructure In the coming months, we will be contacting property owners and residents living near new infrastructure to give them more information on construction timing. We began meeting with eligible property owners in February 2014, to help them prepare for construction and connection to the new wastewater system. Working with council Sydney Water, Hornsby Shire Council and The Hills Shire Council strongly encourage property owners within the serviced area to connect to the new wastewater system as soon as possible, once it is available. This ensures that the important benefits of the scheme are achieved.
