The Energy Local model Our Vision Energy Local s aim is to help thousands of communities to get more value from renewable generation by using it locally. By sharing local generation we can reduce the cost of electricity, tackle fuel poverty, give local renewables a fair price for their power. keep the financial benefit local to build stronger, fairer, more resilient communities. The problem If local generation is not used on site when it is generated, it is sold at~5p/kwh and neighbours who may have invested in it have to buy it back at over twice the price. Domestic Customers are not rewarded for matching local power or using power at cheaper times of day. Energy Local Works with existing organisations as much as possible.

Energy Local by way of an example Ynni Ogwen (Ogwen Energy) raised funds for their community-owned hydro. They lose out with the status quo selling at 5-6p/kWh, buying at ~12p/kwh With Energy Local, households and the hydro form an Energy Local Club. Club members show the amount of power they use when the hydro is generating with a smart meter. Members agree the price for the hydro they use when it is generating, e.g. 7p/kWh. Households get cheaper power and the hydro receives more money.

Energy Local end to end trial Recruited 100 participants Switched to Coop Energy and formed an Energy Local Club. Now have 60 on the Energy Local tariff matching with the hydro output Created an Energy Dashboard cydynni.org.uk Formed Energy Local Hub CIC Still ironing out the wrinkles behind the scenes. Need to get to a cookie cutter process well a rubbery one.

A home hub - scenarios The Home hub is a platform for lots of different services Schedule appliances in the home according to the local generation forecast NOT Big Brother I need my washing done by 6pm, find the best time. Demonstrate the impact of energy efficiency Monitor Temperature, humidity and control heating. Monitor water systems for leakages good for social landlords. Monitor doors and windows, appliances send an alarm if they open/used at unusual times to support the vulnerable. Feed remote measurements to a DNO for planning or ANM..

Win, win win Win for local groups, Greater income for renewables, Economic multiplier, Reduce bills Everyone can be involved, not just share holders. Win for suppliers smoothing local curve, reduce the risk of imbalance low cost of sale, new relationship with customers Win for DNOs a commercial arrangement to facilitates local balancing. potential simplify ANM at LV so it is not safety critical no local balancing and gen is tripped New opportunities for DUoS

Engagement An established organisation is needed as a nucleus. Find a key meeting, stopping off point shop, office, doctor s surgery Tell everyone at about 3 times. Meetings, 1 to 1, with other events, posters, newsletters. We need to find lots of different ways to talk with people everything from Harry hydro to Geek land It s important to give people a helping hand to shift when they use power. Different messages to different demographics worth working this through at the start. Tell a story..

Community Benefit Many people are interested in how electricity is generated and used their own community is a comfy place to learn. Vehicle for other work e.g. energy efficiency, finding those who should be on the priority services register. Motivations are varied but generally in this order community, climate change, intrigued. savings on bills, Getting to know each other inclusion is a big win. Empowering people to speak, get new skills Economic multiplier, cutting costs with clusters

Where we want to go 1000s of Energy Local clubs saving money, supporting. local economy with viable renewables Network operators working with Energy Local Clubs to optimise the network and develop a smart grid A network of facilitators supporting the clubs in their region. Knowledge sharing and tool kit to make the process easy Supplier developing new tariffs and services to harness flexibility and demand side management for a low carbon energy system

Roll out framework - Roles and Responsibilities

Role of social Landlords, tackling fuel poverty Particularly good to spread the benefit/get more value from solar panels. Anyone can join in who uses electricity tackles fuel poverty. Good means to engage on electricity use, energy efficiency use the energy dashboard. Energy dashboard and home hub can be used to demonstrate the benefit of house energy efficiency retrofit, monitor the performance of homes. Social landlords can become facilitators use their existing infrastructure of energy wardens. Tenants associations etc. Could include other households/ right to buy etc. in a project.
