PREMIUMPURE YET ANOTHER STEP Ethanol from agricultural products such as cereals, maize and sugarcane provides major climate benefits compared with fossil products, but SEKAB is taking yet another step. The goal is to further reduce the climate impact of fuel and chemicals and use less arable land in the production process. SEKAB achieves this by exchanging sugar or starch-based raw materials with cellulose. Cellulose is available in large quantities - allowing large-scale production that is not in competition with food production but can be integrated alongside. Brenntag is buying PremiumPURE from SEKAB on behalf of a large fuel client. The ethanol is used to produce racing fuel for customers that can, for example, be found on the Formula 1 racing circuit. PremiumPURE products are made from second-generation ethanol from cellulose. They are renewable, sustainable, fossil-free and use no arable land. 6 biorefinery technology SEKAB KAB CelluAPP BIOREFINERY TECHNOLOGY Almost all biomass can be used to produce important chemicals, ethanol and biogas using SEKAB s CelluAPP, a cellulose-based biorefinery technique considered to be among the top four such processes in the world. A by-product of many types of industries, particularly forestry, agriculture and the timber industry, biomass is created in huge quantities. Today it is often left for waste or burned. By applying CelluAPP we refine biomass and convert it into marketable products that can replace fossil alternatives. The process developed by SEKAB E-Technology consists of four main steps: pre-treatment, hydrolysis, fermentation and distillation. The process decomposes the biomass into the constituents: cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Where there is any kind of biomass CelluAPP can be used to recover biogas, valuable sugar and lignin. Biogas provides energy, sugar is a raw material for chemicals such as ethanol and butanol, and lignin can be pelletised and burned or be used as a raw material in aromatic fine chemicals. The raw material base is great since cellulose builds plant cell walls and is available in virtually unlimited quantities. Environmental benefits today are long-term growth. A transition from petroleum-based chemical processes to bioprocesses based on renewable raw materials provides significant environmental benefits, but it is a big challenge. This challenge means jobs, investments and benefits for everyone. The demo plant in Örnsköldsvik is one of the most advanced in the world and our patented processes have been refined over time. 9 history of chemical industry SEKAB THE CRADLE OF THE SWEDISH CHEMICAL INDUSTRY I n Örnsköldsvik, in the midst of the northern forests, you can find the cradle of Sweden's chemical industry. It is here that SEKAB has its roots. The first drops of ethanol were produced in this area as far back as Now, with over a century of aggregated experience, we are moving forward towards the next generation of sustainable bioethanol and innovative green chemistry solutions. Our society faces a huge challenge. Old energy of sources must be replaced by renewables. SEKAB is one of Europe's leading ethanol players and we are making a major contribution to building a future in which the need for fossil fuels and raw materials is reduced. We do this through the bioethanol we produce and import, the ethanol we refine to produce both renewable fuels and green chemicals During World War II Mo and Domsjö enlarges its chemical industry, which now comprises a wide variety of chemical products based sulphite spirit. SEKAB starts the production and delievry of ED95 to Europe's first two ethanol buses, which enter service in Örnsköldsvik. The first three Ford Taurus FlexiFuel ethanol vehicles are imported to Örnsköldsvik. SEKAB starts to supply E85 to a filling station in the area. Another 50 vehicles of this type are imported to Sweden from the USA. The pilot plant for cellulosic ethanol is inaugurated by Prime Minister Göran Persson and swiftly gains considerable international attention. SEKAB is first in the world to launch and supply verified sustainable ethanol, produced in accordance with strict regarding social conditions, environmental and climate benefit criteria. 10 sustainable Development - ETHANOL BIOFUEL FOR HEAVY GOODS SEKAB has been producing ED95, an ethanol-based biofuel for heavy goods vehicles that significantly lowers emissions of greenhouse gases, since It is used in adapted diesel engines, greatly reducing emissions of both nitrogen oxides and the harmful particles that result from both diesel and biodiesel and which have a negative impact in urban areas. Ethanol buses and lorries are in use around the world in the Swedish capital of Stockholm alone over 700 buses now run on ED95. Public players have already made considerable investment in environmentally friendly transport and private companies are now also becoming aware of the necessary transition to renewable fuels. Haulage contractors Kyl & Frysexpressen is one of these companies and it currently runs 14 of its 70 lorries on ED95. At the request of ICA, one of Sweden s largest grocery chains, Kyl & Frysexpressen runs its vehicles on ED95comprising 100 percent second-generation ethanol. This provides a fuel that does not compete with the production of food and feed. Further, it has superior environmental properties than sustainable bioethanol made from crops. verified SUSTAINABLE ethanol VEHICLES SEKAB was awarded the Sustainable Bioethanol Award in 2009 for research on second-generation biofuels and the Verified sustainable ethanol project.
