Bridgers Association Cameroon is a registered Not-For-Profit grassroots organization, having as mission to empower women and girls through advocacy to pave the way for gender balance. Bridgers operates with the following objectives: Advocacy for activities that minimize violence against women and girls; To train women and girls in entrepreneurial skills for poverty alleviation; Encourage and support women and girls to go to school and promote quality education; Seeking better ways to improve Bridgers services for community development. We work towards our mission to empower women to achieve their potentials under our programs that include: Women Empowerment; Agriculture and Environmental Education; Water Sanitation and Hygiene program (WASH) as well as Human Rights and Citizenship. Bridgers mission is a direct translation from the true life story of its Coordinator and Co-Founder of this charity. Her life story propelled her 1

to put herself to assist the less privilege especially women and girls to attain their dreams in education and life in general. Bridgers has an Executive Board for supervision headed by Rev. Professor Anyambod Emmanuel Anya (Pastor and University Lecturer) and a volunteering team for the daily management and project execution headed by Mrs. Azah Jackline Chey as Coordinator. She holds a Masters Degree in International Law (LL.M) with a six years experience in civil society work. All of these efforts to bridge the gender parity gap between men and women not for competition but complimentarily. At Bridgers Association, we belief that women/young girls are human and so we firmly hold on to the fact that advocating for women/young girls on varied facets of life is producing positive fruits for sustainable development. We lobby for change through our partners, some of whom are government institutions such as; the National Commission on Human Rights and Freedoms, government ministerial departments as well as other grassroots not-for-profit organizations with whom we collaborate in the execution of some projects and working sessions; local administrative and traditional authorities. Call to Action Please donate to support the rehabilitation of a natural drinking spring in Bomaka- Buea Cameroon involving the digging, channeling, piping, tree planting to protect the water and the environment and construction of a dike as well as carry out WASH awareness raising campaigns and workshops. This will improve the hygienic condition of the spring which is witnessing infiltration of running rain water and other impending challenges. Financial Request: $6500 to successfully solve this problem. 2

Description of the problem Water is life and access to good drinking water remains a human right for all but the scarcity of this precious liquid remains a cause for concern in the Buea community in general and Bomaka in particular. The water project which is our subject of concern here is a natural spring which has been serving as a source of drinking water for the inhabitants of this locality for more than seventeen years. Unfortunately, recently, this shallow spring now suffer the infiltration of running rain water into the spring thereby rendering it dirty after rainfall due to the sloppy nature of the environment. Added to the shallow nature, the surrounding environment has no tree and farming activities carried around. Surprisingly, the users of this spring are using a cup or another smaller bucket to collect the water and then fill into another bucket or container because of the shallow nature of the spring thus allowing many users to collect water at the same time from the open pool making it dirty. The absence of trees renders the water sometimes hot especially on sunny days. Also the sloppy nature of the spring environment makes the access road slippery for the users. Situating the Solution in context UN Resolution 64/292 of 2010 recognizes the human right to water and sanitation and acknowledges that clean drinking water and sanitation are essential to the realization of all human rights. According to WHO 1 Diarrheal illness was the underlying cause of roughly 1.5 million deaths globally in The same study emphasize that in low and middle income nations, inadequate access to safe water, poor hygiene, and unimproved 1 World Health Organization. 4 sanitation conditions (also known as the WASH paradigm) are responsible for 502,000 deaths per year, with 58% of all diarrheal disease-related deaths in these countries. Poor WASH conditions contribute to the spread of gastrointestinal pathogens via mainly the fecal-oral route. 2 High-quality WASH interventions have proven to be effective in combating diarrheal illness 3 and others. The research indicated that with hygiene based interventions such as hygiene education campaigns, it has the potency to reduce the risk of diarrheal incidence by 45%, with a pooled estimated relative risk of 0.55 (95% CI ). It's against this backdrop that Bridgers Association Cameroon carried out a study on the situation at the end of which unanimously with the inhabitants of Bomaka Boma concluded that the rehabilitation of this natural spring will greatly help their situation not only health wise but socially and economically too. Project Activities/Objectives To prevent the infiltration of running water, we shall construct a dike above the spring redirecting any running water to two different directions. To improve on the shallow nature of the spring and the hygienic condition of the open pool, we shall dig deep the pool and then use two pipes to connect and properly channel the flow of water for collection. 2 Fewtrell L., Prüss-üstün A., Bos R., Gore F., Bartram J. 5 In order to ease access into and out of the spring, stairs shall be constructed on the two opposite sides. To shed the spring and protect the environment, we shall plant water friendly trees around the spring. There shall be two door to door community awareness raising campaigns before and after the project to sensitize the community on basic water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices. There shall be two stakeholder workshops before and after the project implementation to prepare and assess the project and concerned activities and WASH training in general. Project Outcome The entire Bomaka community would significantly benefit from a guaranteed clean and safe drinking water free from any form of infiltration and impurities and also gain WASH knowledge from the workshops and awareness raising campaigns thanks to your support. Lives will be saved and the money that would have been used for hospital bills will be saved for other useful activities to improve on their livelihoods. The trees planted will protect the spring as well as ensure environmental sustainability. We believe all of these will create a long lasting impact in the lives of the more than 3000 people in this community. Community Support The beneficiary community through the Quarter head has promised maximum labour support. They have agreed to work with the technicians during the 5

construction phase of the project. They have also promised to carry out clean up campaigns in the surrounding. A house has been identified to accommodate project materials such as cement and rots during the construction period. A member of the community has promised to nurse water friendly trees which will be planted around the project site to protect the environment and give shed to the water. He has equally promised to follow up the growth of the trees. Project Sustainability On sustainability the Quarter head has promised to take responsibility over the project after the implementation given that it is community water. Thus, the question of sustainability rest with the quarter head and his community members who will form a voluntary water management committee of five persons to oversee the proper usage of this water facility after its completion. This is realistic in the sense that, for the past more than 17 years, this spring has been managed by the community under the quarter head. Clean up campaigns will systematically be organized by the quarter head and his committee as promised. Monitoring and Evaluation Bridgers Association Cameroon will hold this project jealously and will do systematic follow up for at least one year to be sure that the project facilities are properly used and that the trees are also growing well. By virtue of the fact that water is a basic necessity in every household, it is eminent that the community will value this project and again the enthusiasm with which the community members received Bridgers team during the study phase and expressed, lives one with the convincing impression that they will equally be responsible in the usage of their water facility after the project implementation. 6

Our passionate team of volunteers will measure success of the project with the use of questionnaires and interviews before and after the project. They will repeat the exercise every month continuously for six months after the project has been implemented. From then we shall be able to ascertain the actual impact of the project in the lives of the beneficiaries.
