Material recovery, energy optimization and industrial symbiosis Joint development between Mirka and Ekokem Presenter: Mats Stoor Quality from start to finish

Background Increasing energy prices Demand for new solutions Landfill deposit fees increased Energy rich waste Internal waste streams increased due to more production capacity (3000 tons/y) challanges Energy price development energy solution Multi-way recycling process No more landfill 10 MW Engineered worldclass recycling/refining system Two way industrial symbiosis 3000 ton waste stream sustainable products 2

Drivers Goals Impact Customer demand for high-quality products Sustainability Cost efficiency Securing high-quality raw materials unique technology package Industrial symbiosis concept by: - refining low-value waste streams - expanding the use of renewable and bio energy Wastestream solution for end customer complete ecosystem for lifecycle of flexible abrasives Added-value products with improved quality and performance Innovative business model Long-term competitiveness Creation of new business, exports and new jobs Product ecosystem for end customer Bioenergy integration Thermal treatment and recovery Industrial symbiosis Surface modifications sustainable energy enables new processes 3

Overall goal of project Create new technology for production of abrasive minerals based on integrated bioenergy production and material recovery Upgrade low value feed stocks and waste streams into high quality raw materials for Mirka s production of flexible abrasives. Mineral recovery Recovery of fine Aluminum oxide particles from recovery process Better utilization and handling of own waste streams Feasibility for coated abrasive ecosystem Added value to refractory minerals Tailor-made products improved industrial symbiosis Access to cheap energy (electricity) enables new energy intense processes. 4

Concrete results of the project: bioenergy-based mineral technology Investigating what kind of materials streams can be found Pilot scale testing Sustainable energy solution for energy demanding processes Network between universites refining processes Technology for refining and upgrading of mineral grains in order to enable use of recycled minerals Process techniques that will provide tailor-made new unique products Turning incineration furnace into a refining/recycling reactor Multi-source energy solution to ensure sustainability and energy efficiency Unique technology to turn waste into valuable raw-materials Basis for making the calculations for a full-scale system technologies for universities Improved relationship know-how

technology, new sustainability products Sustainability Image, Our clean Comittments Unique, holistic, new, abrasives technology The product of the future: Recycled grits Bioenergy powered abrasives production More value from less energy. Full integration of bioenergy, values recovery and production of abrasive materials Sustainability Recycled paper Products 6
