A GUIDE TO ACHIEVING SUCCESSFUL LED LIGHTING PROJECTS 8th Local Government and Public Sector Building Maintenance and Facility Management Conference Matthew Martin MIES

Another title could be: What to ask a LED salesperson Aim of today is for you to learn about LED and have an Ah Ha moment. Please Ask Questions What relevant things to know about LED. What has been your experience?

Lighting terms Lamps (the light source) Luminaire (light fitting or fixture) Light (lumens) Lux (lumens on an area)

What is LED? Light Emitting Diode An electronic component What kills electronics? So what kills LED? How LED s are made Binning Simply - quality costs

What s the difference? So many LED luminaires to choose from!

Beam The distribution of light from the luminaire. Critical as this effects how the light illuminates the space. Measured in degrees Also diffuser types Glare rings, baffles.

Colour The colour light perceived by people that is emitted from a luminaire. Measured in Kelvins (K ) 2700K Traditional incandescent lamp 3000K Warm white 4000K Neutral White (Cool) 6000K Daylight

Why is colour important? Do we have a choice? Did we have a choice? Perception Sets the mood Triggers our circadian rhythms We light for people (not buildings or things)

Colour Quality The difference of how things (people) appear between artificial light and natural light. Measured in CRI percentiles, CRI 70% = 70-79%, CRI 80% = 80-89%. The higher the value the better McAdam steps, the less the higher quality / uniformity.

Intensity How much light emitted from a luminaire. Measured in Lumens (Lm) LED lumens is not the whole picture.

Efficacy How much electricity is used to make the light The consumption, Wattage (W) Check the efficacy of the luminaire simply by dividing the lumen output by the total watts consumed. Example: 780lm / 8W = 97.5 Lumens / Watt

Operating Temperature Ambient temperature the luminaire is designed to operate (normally / as designed) at. What the luminaire has been rated / tested at.

Compliance RCM mark (supercedes C-Tick) Rated voltage Double Insulated

Life Expectancy What is the extrapolated life expectancy Check the ambient / operating temperature 50,000hrs? Lxx Check the fine print

Other functional aspects IP rating (Ingress Protection) e.g. IP44 Dimmable.. Multi colour switchable (who does that really benefit?) Warranty

Wow! That s a lot LED is more complicated than traditional lighting. Used in warmer / heated areas needs further consideration. Used in cooler / chilled areas awesome. Don t forget the additional benefits of reduced ongoing maintenance & improving lighting quality.

What about Ipart? Compares only 5 criteria: 1. Lamp circuit power: actual in W 2. Lamp Life 30,000hrs 3. Electrical Safety: * 4. EMC compatibility: * RCM mark 5. Power Factor: (>0.9) 1 & 5 verification from a NATA lab, 2 is the LM80 report, * 3 & 4 are mandatory for sale in Australia.

Get Help LED is complex and this increases when retrofitting existing buildings. Engage a lighting design professional to assist. Energy Savings at the cost of function is short sighted value.

See the Goods Lighting levels increased threefold to over 300lux Power density down from 15W/m² to 11W/m² Energy Savings of 900kWh, approx. $210 per annum.

Purpose of a café? Text 97 of 50W halogen lamps were removed and replaced with 23 of 10W LED down lights, 5 of 32W small pendants and 9 of large 144W pendants. Reduced the power density from 25W/m² to 7.5W/m². Energy Savings of 22,760 KWh/annum. Maintenance savings expected to be more than the energy savings of $5,700

Sense of Space Lighting Levels improved ~150%, Cave effect removed. Energy Savings of 12,500kWh, approx. $2,750 per annum
