Tomsk Polytechnic University The Hydrogen Megaproject in Tomsk Professor Thorsteinn I. Sigfusson Leading International Scientist of project Director General of Innovation Center Iceland Global Energy Laureate 2007

In 2010 I got a phonecall from Siberia! Asking me to lead a large project on hydrogen and fuel cells at Tomsk Polytechnic University and Inst. Thermal Physics RAS Novosibirsk. As I can be considered to be an offspring of Russian science (from my time as a PhD student in the Cavendish Lab Cambridge partly affected by Prof. Kapitza) and knowing the potential of Russian scientific knowledge, I immediately said YES.

From Cold to COLD February 2011 I left a snowy Reykjavik at minus 8 Centigrades To fly to icy Tomsk to minus 40 Centigrades I was the spy who came out of the cold to an even more cold! To meet the warmest hearts on Earth!

Russia, Siberia and Tomsk Moscow Tomsk

Tomsk city Founded: 1604 Population: River: Tom Universities: 6 Students: Tomsk is a prominent academic and scientific centre. There are 6 universities, 20 higher research institutes and many specialize further. About 90 thousand students live and study in Tomsk. There are more than 70 industrial enterprises in Tomsk region. The main branches of industry are: oil and gas, instrument making, machine building, metal and wood processing, food processing, thermal and electric power production. Tomsk Si Scientific Center of Siberiani branch of Russian Academy of Si Sciences is located here. It consists of 5 academic institutes and a series of subdivisions. Tomsk is a cultural centre. There are many theatres, Philharmonic Society, and the whole cultural flora. Tomsk is remarkable for its wooden architecture. Tomsk carefully keeps houses and buildings of 19th century in the «Old Town».

Tomsk Polytechnic University (Rector Peter Chubik) Foundedin 1896, Tomsk PolytechnicUniversity is the oldest technical educational institution in the Asian part of Russia. More than specialists have graduated from the university, over 300 of them have become Academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences, honorary instructors and researchers, winners of prestigious Russian and international awards. 23,400 under and post graduates, 580 PhD students and 46 doctoral students study at the university Annual number of graduates amounts to nearly university branch campuses and 12 representative offices functionate in many cities of Russia, CIS countries, as well as in Germany (Karlsruhe), Czech Republic (Prague), Republic of Cyprus (Nicosia).

The current Hydrogen Project The project grant is 4 MEuro Renewable Energy and the role of Hydrogen in future energy scenarios The project is in various phases ranging from education to innovation and is intended solely for improving po Russian Innovative oa Technology ogy Agreement 11.G of г. Many thanks to the Russian Ministry of Education and Science!

SOFC has been developed operating at С. The final target of the project is to develop manufacturing technologies along with prototype planar thin film solid oxide fuel cells with the following parameters: 1. element area of 50 х 50 mm 2 2. power density at least 0.5 W/сm 2 at temperature not more than 700 o С. experimental facility for electro arc film deposition of solid oxide electrolyte

Tomsk is a box of toys for the physicist! Facilities and LaboratoryEquipment a cyclotron with controlled ion energy; a nuclear reactor; high current impulse ion and electron accelerators; microtones (2 units); Van de Graaff accelerator for 2.5 MeV; analyticalequipment for investigationofof properties, composition, and structure of substances; plasma facilities (about 20 units); laboratory equipments for academic process (about 300 sets); and so on.

More outcome of project Effect of hydrogen on properties of materials applied to geothermal drilling New polymer membranes for fuel cells having been treatedwith thecyclotron Hydrogen and supercritical steam in geothermal applications Fuel cell testing equipment and facilities

Today we are at Hannover Messe! My colleagues will continue telling you about the best kept secret of Russia in the next hour or so: Nicolai Soichugov on SOFC Vladimir Golovkov on behalf of Valerie Krivobokov on plasmas and cyclotrons Ivan Chernov on sophisticated hydrogen excitations by radiation

Please enjoy! On behalf of the Russian team I should like to thank the organisers of Hannover Messe for the invitation to us to come here: Please enjoy!
