1 The Peel Watershed Assessing the Cmplexities f a Land Use Issue Lessn Overview In this lessn, students will use the Canadian Atlas Online t lcate and gather infrmatin abut the Peel Watershed. They will explre the Recmmended Peel Watershed Land Use Plan t identify land use issues and different viewpints n develpment in the Peel Watershed. Finally, students will develp an advertisement that expresses their persnal psitin n the issue. 3 The Lessn The Lessn Teacher Activity Student Activity Intrductin Review the cncept f bias with students by cmpleting the fllwing activity: Shw students the fllwing qutatin: Lcated in NE Yukn this vast and exquisite wilderness Watershed is the size f Sctland. We have the pprtunity t prtect the unspiled waters and wilderness f this area befre the regin is industrialized with rads, mining, il and gas. It is well deserving f prtectin! Its stunning muntains and pristine river valleys prvide imprtant wildlife habitat in a rich landscape. It is a refuge fr bth the human psyche and species adapting t a changing climate. As places like this becme increasingly rare we have a prfund glbal respnsibility t pass these wnders f nature n t future generatins. Read and cmment n any bias in the qutatin. The Draft Peel Watershed Land Use Plan was released April 28 th [, 2010]. It prpses 11% prtectin. (Surce: The Big Wild Org.) As a class, cmment n the qute and use it t discuss bias. Repeat the abve activity with this qutatin frm the Yukn Chamber f Mines President, Charles Schulze: Schulze said envirnmental prtectin and mineral explratin can c-exist in the watershed, but hw the area is prtected depends n hw gvernments regulate activity. Read the qutatin and discuss bias. "What we wuld cnsider prtectin is that yu have a stringent regulatry regime that bases its mitigatin n sensitivity f the area," he said.
