Dakabin Waste Facility WASTE REDUCTION CONVERTING LANDFILL GAS INTO GREEN ENERGY Christopher Vakas Principal Waste Facilities Officer 3 November 2016

Waste Management Statistics The Moreton Bay Regional Council Third largest Council by population in Australia. Covers 2,037 square kilometres. Population of approximately 417,000 (2015), predicted 533,000 by Recycling 47% of the total waste stream, 2015/16 176,439 tonnes of waste sent to landfill for disposal Free tipping for local residents. Lowest waste levies in South East Queensland.

Landfill Gas to Energy Plant (LGEP) Commenced November 2015 Landfill gas collection Area currently 22 Ha Gas extraction wells 67 Engine Jenbacher Green Energy Plant V20 1MW / Hour output Cost $3,100,000 Consumes approximately 1,500 Tonne of CH4 each year Abates 32,000 Tonnes of CO2e each year Generates up to 8760MWH of electricity per year Powers 1,500 homes in the area plus the landfill Power generation 50 + years

Upgrades December 2015 LGI completed upgrades to the LFG system in December 2015 Installing an additional 16 vertical gas extraction wells, 99.6% availability for January producing 740MW hours of Energy Average flow rate was 688Nm3/hour at 55% CH4.

Recent Maintenance Landfill gas contains various contaminants, which collect and build up within the engine. Management of these contaminants generally consists of routine oil monitoring and changes, oil filters, and gas filter membrane replacements. Dakabin required an engine de-coke after only 8 months of operation.

Current Situation Since plant commissioning - plant has averaged greater than 95% availability over this period, - consumed 5,020,252m3 of landfill gas, representing a carbon abatement of approximately 35,762 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, - generated over 7,500 MWh. Average flow rate is currently 627Nm3/hour at 50.4% CH4.

Current Situation

Environmental Benefit One LFGE at 1MW/Hour is equivalent to - Removing 6,300 cars from the road, or - Preserving 323 acres of forest from deforestation, or - Recycling 10,300 tonnes of waste material diverted from landfill.
