1 Frt Burgyne Update Newsletter Nvember 2018 Welcme t the first editin f a regular newsletter n the activity f the Land Trust and partners at Frt Burgyne. Since acquiring the site in 2014 the Land Trust has sught t develp a better understanding f the cnditin f the Frt and the pprtunities fr its future develpment. While this has been taking place we have develped pprtunities fr the residents f Dver and beynd t engage with the site thrugh guided walks, vlunteer wrk parties (wh have

2 transfrmed the appearance f the site and re-pened lng lst views) and events including ghst hunts and theatrical perfrmances. The prximity f Gustn Primary Schl t the Frt s gates has nt gne unnticed and pupils have made explratry visits in a relatinship we hpe t grw. Other student activity n site includes a pst graduate study f bats and a shrt film made by students frm the University f Kent. In the wider estate we have invested in re-fencing Cmbe Hle lcal wildlife site including the installatin f 12 kissing gates t imprve access t this space between the Frt and Cnnaught Park. All f this wrk has led us t a pint where we can start t deliver prjects f greater impact bth in terms f the site cnditin and its redevelpment. Cnditin f the Frt Reprts have highlighted a number f key threats t the Frt and in respnse t this the Trustees have agreed t a three year prgramme f cnservatin wrk which will address issues including: Failing structural integrity f the bridge int the site Failure f ditch retaining wall Damp and wet rt Capnier face drainage Tenders have been issued fr the appintment f cnsultants with the gal being t have year ne wrks n site fllwing receipt f Scheduled Mnument Cnsent by June 2019.

3 Artsmark and Arts Award Utilising funding prvided by Artswrk, and the Suth East Bridge, we will be wrking with Animate Arts t supprt three schls n a jurney t achieve Artsmark status. Alngside this we are aiming t supprt 90 pupils t achieve Arts Award explre. Building n a generic educatin pack fr habitats n Frt sites we aim t have a Frt Burgyne educatin pack and Arts Award activity pack in place by summer West Wing Battery The Trustees have agreed t invest in a prject which will cnserve and seek t prvide managed public access t the West Wing Battery f the Frt. This actin has been prpsed as a psitive respnse t prgress made n the regeneratin f Cnnaught Barracks with plans fr 64 huses n the Officer s Mess. Tenders are presently ut fr the appintment f architects t deliver the prject in the West Wing which we hpe t cmplete by June In rder t build cmmunity wnership f a space which has largely been ut f bunds since its cnstructin the Trust is allcating a prprtin f the secured Pineering Places: East Kent grant t this space. Tenders have been issued t seek appintment f artists t wrk with cmmunities t infrm access and ptential future uses f the space t feed int final design prpsals which will

4 need Scheduled Mnument Cnsent prir t delivery. We hpe t cmmence the cnsultatin in December Frt Burgyne Year f Engagement 2019 Pineering Places: East Kent funding is being utilised t engage a partner t deliver a year f engagement in the future use f Frt Burgyne with cmmunities and stakehlders. Whilst the ecnmic viability f any future use prpsals needs cnfirming, there is a real need t build cmmunity supprt fr prpsals and discver hw peple want t interact with the site in future. Whilst the year f engagement is being delivered, the Trust will be seeking t reslve sme majr challenges including ptential future car parking and service prvisin t internal spaces tgether with undertaking ecnmic viability assessments. We are als lking t extend the Land Trust s Green Angels training prgramme t the Frt. This scheme was funded initially by Big Lttery Fund in Evertn Park but has since been extended t sites we manage in Yrkshire and Warringtn. The prject aims t supprt individuals in develping knwledge and skills either with a view t gaining emplyment r t help them in vlunteering. We hpe t run a first curse based arund the sites grassland habitat in Spring 2019 with further pprtunities in hard landscaping and histric building cnservatin fllwing ver time. Pineering Places: East Kent Part f the natinal Great Place Scheme, Pineering Places is an ambitius prject that will make East Kent an even better place t live, wrk and visit by explring heritage, develping civic pride and cnnecting artists and cmmunities. Fur exemplar heritage and arts prjects in Flkestne, Ramsgate, Canterbury and Dver will be led by lcal cultural rganisatins t influence plicy makers, and encurage diverse peple t bring in change and becme great place-makers. Pineering places: East Kent is supprted by the Natinal Lttery thrugh Arts Cuncil England and the Heritage Lttery Fund, with Histric England and Artswrk, the Suth East Bridge.
