2 Ongoing project : Project duration: (18 months) Budget allocation: Budget source: Operational program Environment Project is under the Public tender procedure The State Remediation Program of Contaminated sites ( ) Contains the list of high priority sites (54 sites) where geological works have to be urgently carried out (contamination of ground water and soil can cause high human health risk and environmental risk) Ongoing project contains 54 priority sites

3 Ongoing project : Geological works will be mainly focused on: identification of all sources of contamination, detailed description of: geology, hydrogeology and geochemical conditions, all pollutants, the extent of contamination of soil and groundwater as a basis for environmental and health risks assessment as a basis for remediation projects

4 Ongoing project : 54 sites can be divided according to the activities which caused contamination into 6 groups: Former mining sites Former industry sites (8 sites) (10 sites) Abandoned landfills Abandoned storages (11 sites) of pesticides residues (6 sites) Military bases Railway yards (13 sites) (6 sites) Main pollutants are: hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, heavy metals, cyanides, pesticides, PCB (1 site)

Act. on Certain Measures in Relation to Environmental burdens - the Method for Determining the liable Person ( polluter pay principle) 2. Operational Program Environment - the Method for Determining the eligible site both conditions have to be fulfilled: 1. It is not possible to determine the Liable person - the Government determines Liable person based on the proposal of the MoE SR 2. The owner of real estate is Slovak Republic or local Municipality Project contains 19 priority sites for 6 sites the competent Ministry is Ministry of Defense and for 13 sites - the competent Ministry is Ministry of Environment (2 former military sites, 4 sites abandoned landfills, 2 sites abandoned goudron s storages, 4 sites railway yards)

6 Project in preparation Remediation of Environmental burdens at priority sites WHAT have to be carried out before submition of aplication form under Operational Program Environment (deadline is July 31 st 2013)? 1. for 19 sites (according to the Act on Environmental burdens) the competent Ministry is obliged to submit a Plan of works to the Regional environmental office the Plan of works contains: schedules for activities Updates to the Risk assessment Remediation of contaminated site Post remediation Monitoring necessary expenses for the implementation of the Plan of works particulars required by the Project of geological works 2. for 19 sites the competent Ministry has to submit the Projects of geological works according to the Geological Act.
