We are excited to announce that we will open a new alternative fuel plant in Sydney s west in late This world-class facility at Wetherill Park will divert up to 150,000 tonnes of waste from landfill each year to use in making Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). More domestic hard waste is now being used to produce PEF at the SUEZ-ResourceCo facility at Wingfield in South Australia thanks to an initiative of the City of Burnside and East Waste. In this issue, you ll also read about the 20-year partnership between Bridgestone and Tyrecycle that has seen more than 100,000 tonnes of used tyres recycled. That s equal to two football fields. Each project helps to meet our strong commitment to conserve natural resources, to reduce landfill and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using waste in new ways. We ve also successfully expanded into the New South Wales market. A first-time partnership between ResourceCo and Ferrovial York Joint Venture is helping to deliver a major road upgrade in Sydney s northern beaches. And in Melbourne, we ve been involved with a landmark apartment development. With growth comes change. An important change at ResourceCo Asia has been the appointment of respected industry expert, Pavel Cech, as its Managing Director. Having worked around the world, including with cement giant Lafarge, Mr Cech has more than 20 years experience in the alternative fuel sector. Our continued success is due in large part to our people and the ongoing support of our valued clients. Working with you, we look forward to a very positive 12 months ahead. Simon Brown Managing Director WITH GROWTH COMES CHANGE. ResourceCo strives to adopt an environmentally responsible approach in all its activities. FULL CIRCLE is a publication by ResourceCo Pty Ltd. 4 Polished concrete a timeless choice for flooring With its smart good looks and durability, polished concrete is fast becoming a floor finish of choice in homes and commercial settings. This attractive, hard-wearing and easy-care option leaves the concrete surface exposed as the final floor finish. Special aggregates such as quartz, granite and river stone are added to the concrete. Then the surface is sanded with progressively finer grinding tools to reveal their natural beauty. ResourceCo Concrete Divisional Manager, Eddy Crosato, says that polished concrete is as versatile as it is practical. From the colour of the concrete to the choice of aggregates and the final finish on the surface, customers can design the look they like to match any décor, said Mr Crosato. Our decorative concrete comes in coloured, polished, and exposed finishes. We can work with builders, tradespeople and homeowners to achieve the result they want. The product is also a sustainable flooring choice. Due to the high percentage of recycled aggregate we use, it achieves a carbon footprint reduction of up to 65 per cent compared with quarried alternatives. FROM THE COLOUR OF THE CONCRETE TO THE CHOICE OF AGGREGATES AND THE FINAL FINISH ON THE SURFACE, CUSTOMERS CAN DESIGN THE LOOK THEY LIKE TO MATCH ANY DÉCOR, SAID MR CROSATO. For owner-builder Michael Kokolakis, polished concrete was a natural choice in his new family home. I have always liked the look of polished concrete over a large space. I ve used ResourceCo concrete through my business, so I thought why not try a polished finish for something different. We also like the industrial look and this is a perfect nod to that, said Mr Kokolakis. We spent a fair bit of time screeding the concrete to expose just the right amount of aggregate throughout the larger spaces. An exposed aggregate finish was used outside the home giving a seamless look. Mr Crosato explained that for external use, more stone is added to the mix to ensure enough is revealed during finishing. This highlights the natural qualities of the stone and gives a coarse surface. This is well suited to entertaining areas, pool surrounds, pathways and driveways where grip is important, he said. Mr Kokolakis said the family had renovated and moved houses several times, with their latest flooring choice attracting the most comments. We are really happy with the result. We love that it s a little bit different and how easy it is to keep clean. 4

Smarter solution for hard waste disposal Rather than going to landfill, unwanted household items are being used to produce an alternative fuel thanks to an initiative of the City of Burnside and East Waste. As part of their commitment to reduce landfill, the council and its waste provider East Waste, trialled a free, at-call hard waste collection service for residents in This replaced an annual kerbside pick-up. Residents book a time for East Waste to collect items like furniture, whitegoods, floor and window coverings, scrap metal, bikes and toys from their homes. Our main aim, in conjunction with Council, was to find an environmentally responsible alternative to sending this material to landfill, said Adam Faulkner, East Waste s General Manager. We chose the SUEZ-ResourceCo alternative fuels facility at Wingfield as it recycles or reuses 95 per cent of all incoming materials. This compares with about per cent if sent to landfill, he said. The plant processes waste into an engineered fuel product used to fire the kilns at Adelaide Brighton Cement, replacing the use of non-renewable fossil fuels. Put simply, we couldn t find a better option in terms of landfill diversion performance, said Mr Faulkner. We put about 400 tonnes of material through the facility during the trial. In terms of diverting waste from landfill, the results met all our expectations. Based on the success of the trial, East Waste continues to work with SUEZ-ResourceCo, which processed 500 tonnes of domestic hard waste from the City of Burnside last financial year. While the cost of waste disposal is a factor, achieving the best environmental outcome is the main incentive for us and the councils we work with, said Mr Faulkner. So we tend to form relationships with companies and facilities that align with our values around diverting waste from landfill, he said. The City of Burnside diverts around 65 per cent of household waste from landfill through its three-bin and a basket system. By moving some of our other waste streams to this type of solution, we can set our sights even higher to further boost this diversion target. Mr Faulkner said that the initiative has produced a more mature hard waste collection service with strong environmental outcomes. It s crystal clear that this was the right solution for us. PUT SIMPLY, WE COULDN T FIND A BETTER OPTION IN TERMS OF LANDFILL DIVERSION PERFORMANCE, SAID MR FAULKNER. 5

Alternative fuel facility a first for NSW A world-class alternative fuel plant in New South Wales is set to provide industry with an environmentally sustainable substitute for both landfill waste disposal and fossil fuels such as coal. The new facility being built by ResourceCo at Wetherill Park in Sydney s west, will use waste otherwise destined for landfill, to manufacture Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). ResourceCo Managing Director, Simon Brown, said the $30 million operation will deliver tremendous benefits for the state s economy, business and the environment. We saw a perfect opportunity to meet sizeable demand in NSW to keep waste out of landfill, Mr Brown said. The Wetherill Park plant will accept select waste materials such as residual plastics, textiles, paper, cardboard and timbers to produce PEF. These resources currently go to landfill as they can t be recycled into other products. USING ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, THE PLANT WILL SEPARATE ALL INCOMING MATERIALS AND REMOVE THOSE THAT CAN BE RECYCLED. THE COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL IS EXTRACTED AND THEN PROCESSED INTO THE ALTERNATIVE FUEL. 6

Using advanced technology, the plant will separate all incoming materials and remove those that can be recycled. The combustible material is extracted and then processed into the alternative fuel. Mr Brown said customer convenience was an important factor in choosing the right location. The 2.1-hectare site is just 34 kilometres from Sydney s CBD in a major industrial zone, close to both the M4 and M7 motorways. Set to open in late 2017, the plant will be able to accept up to 150,000 tonnes of suitable waste materials each year. PEF replaces fossil fuels used to power cement kilns. The new plant will supply PEF to the cement industry to reduce their coal consumption, and to multinational cement producers in the wider South-East Asian region. Mr Brown said that PEF is not only a cheaper alternative to fossil fuels, but one that has many benefits for the environment. We will be able to recover and reuse more than 90 per cent of the material we receive. That means less waste sent to landfill, less reliance on finite natural resources, and less greenhouse gas emissions, he said. The benefits will flow on to employment with the project creating around 50 local construction jobs and 30 ongoing positions once the plant opens. Resource recovery operations create more than five times as many jobs as landfill for the same volume of waste accepted. This major project has attracted a $5 million grant through the New South Wales Government s Waste Less Recycle More Initiative as well as funding from the Clean Energy Finance Corporation. When complete, Wetherill Park will be one of only two large-scale PEF plants in Australia, the first being the SUEZ-ResourceCo facility in SA. This project further reinforces our reputation as a leading alternative fuel supplier. 7

Asia ready for growth in alternative fuels Global demand for alternative fuels continues to grow, including in the rapidly developing countries of South-East Asia. ResourceCo Asia s Managing Director, Pavel Cech, said that there are significant opportunities to establish waste-to-energy (WtE) projects in the region. Over the past 12 months, our team has explored several potential projects. We used three key feasibility indicators; applicability in the local market, viability in terms of infrastructure and cost, and timing, said Mr Cech. The results re-confirmed enormous potential in Malaysia and the Philippines, fast maturing conditions in Thailand and Vietnam, and a turning point in the Indonesian market. In 2011, ResourceCo Asia opened a facility in Ipoh, Malaysia to produce Processed Engineered Fuel (PEF). We have since formed a long-term partnership to supply cement producer, LafargeHolcim Malaysia, with around 60,000 tonnes of PEF annually. This has enabled LafargeHolcim to reduce its reliance on coal, save on kiln fuel costs and reduce the carbon footprint of its local operations. Due to our ability to quadruple local waste sourcing, our LafargeHolcim Kanthan plant is gradually increasing its feed rate, while adjusting the production process to match the new supply level. Our plant now produces up to 250 tonnes per day (tpd) of PEF compared with the previous 18-month average of less than 100 tpd. To maintain that performance, we plan to upgrade our shredding equipment, said Mr Cech. We are also running a small scale industrial trial with Tasek Cement. Based on the positive results so far, we will design and install a more robust system to enable incremental consumption of at least 100 tpd by the year s end. With negotiations under way on two further projects, Mr Cech is confident that demand will drive the need to build new facilities. As there are more than 200 dedicated cement kilns in South- East Asia, competition is intense. We are well placed to help cement producers manage the key challenge of reducing their operating costs, he said. Like Malaysia, the Philippines has a strong regulatory framework that allows the use of PEF. It has a mature cement industry familiar with alternative fuels. ResourceCo Asia has already secured PEF import permits for three kilns and is developing long-term logistic solutions to supply PEF. As in many rapidly growing economies, the Philippines is facing a municipal solid waste (MSW) crisis. This has led its legislators to re-examine alternatives to landfill disposal. ResourceCo Asia is in talks with two major local waste management groups about local PEF and tyre derived fuel projects in the country s two largest municipalities. 8

Mr Cech explained that the main technical challenge is to choose the right sorting and pretreatment process to valorize the targeted fraction of MSW (<25% of the total wet waste). He added that while the cost of waste disposal is currently very low, change is on the horizon. In Thailand, the government supports both alternative fuels and WtE technology. The cement industry is well-equipped and developed, and there is a ready supply of municipal solid waste, and commercial and industrial waste. As in the Philippines, we see the potential for joint ventures with local companies that are already active in this field, said Mr Cech. We are also keeping a watching brief on Vietnam and Indonesia, where regulatory change is under way. Fossil fuels are becoming expensive. Governments are under pressure to find clean energy alternatives and to improve their waste management practices. ResourceCo Asia is ready to ride this wave of change. WE ARE ALSO KEEPING A WATCHING BRIEF ON VIETNAM AND INDONESIA, WHERE REGULATORY CHANGE IS UNDER WAY. 9

New Melbourne apartment complex on the horizon ResourceCo Material Solutions has been involved from the ground up on a landmark apartment development being built in the north-east Melbourne suburb of Ivanhoe. The Ivanhoe Apartments on Upper Heidelberg Road, one of Melbourne s highest points, are just 10 kilometres from the CBD, close to both the Austin Hospital and busy Heidelberg Station. ResourceCo began work with client BRC Piling and Foundations last May on excavating the four-storey basement for the complex one of BRC s largest projects to date. By the end of 2016, we had removed around 50,000 solid cubic metres of material ranging from granitic sands and silty clays, through to siltstone at extreme depths, said ResourceCo Account Manager, Andrew Langworthy. This range of materials called for forward thinking to make sure the client received the best available disposal options in the market, with both cost and the environment in mind, he said. Sandy material was blended into our recycled concrete products, while other materials were reused to cap landfill or as block fill for new housing subdivisions. The weather has also proved a challenge. Delays caused by a very wet winter and heavy spring rains meant searching for the most efficient and cost effective disposal solutions for the client on a daily basis. Mr Langworthy said that with the support of its dedicated fleet of contractors, ResourceCo Material Solutions was able to supply up to 20 trucks and trailers per day at times of peak demand. Strong ongoing relationships with the client and our network of trusted suppliers, combined with extensive local market knowledge are vital to the success of a major project like this, he said. 10

ResourceCo makes a major inroad into NSW market A partnership between ResourceCo Material Solutions and Ferrovial York Joint Venture has seen us successfully deliver our first project in New South Wales. The work is part of a $500 million infrastructure upgrade that will improve traffic flow to Sydney s northern beaches and provide access to the area s new hospital due to open in National Business Development Manager, Deane Reid, said that the project at Warringah Road, Frenchs Forest has called for unique transport and disposal solutions. The project involved removing a large amount of classified excavated natural material (ENM) and virgin excavated natural material (VENM) clay and sandstone. We then needed to find commercially viable options for its disposal in the Sydney market, Mr Reid said. This meant identifying sites with development approval where we could reuse the excavated material while also meeting the project budget for transport and disposal. Around 260,000 tonnes of material will be moved during the two stages of the project. To meet daily volume targets, ResourceCo Material Solutions formed a suitably qualified fleet of up to 50 trucks and trailers. All vehicles had to be inducted with insurances, risk assessments and maintenance records to comply with the strict standards for contractors set by the project s principal stakeholder, Roads and Maritime Services. ResourceCo are doing an excellent job in supplying the project with the trucking resources we require and are able to act quickly to meet our changing needs, said Aaron Rogers, Ferrovial York Joint Venture s General Superintendent. Since it began in August 2016, the project has faced some challenges. Among these was managing material containing high levels of organics, including tree roots, that was classified as outside of the original scope. Using our extensive networks, we gained quick approval for disposal avoiding any downtime, while achieving the best commercial outcome for our client. OUR SUCCESS IN DELIVERING THIS KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT JUST MONTHS AFTER ENTERING A NEW MARKET SHOWS THAT RESOURCECO HAS THE ABILITY TO COMPLETE COMPLEX PROJECTS ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA, MR REID SAID. 11

An en-tyre-ly impressive effort A collaboration between two leaders in the tyre sector is generating huge environmental dividends for Australia. The 20-year partnership between Australia s largest tyre importer, Bridgestone, and the biggest tyre recycler, Tyrecycle, has enabled the diversion of more than 100,000 tonnes of tyres from landfill. That s enough to fill two football stadiums. Bridgestone Managing Director, Andrew Moffatt, said at least 106,000 tonnes of used tyres had been handled by Tyrecycle. This was equal to more than 12.5 million passenger tyres. As Australia s tyre industry market leader, we take our responsibility over the handling of our products very seriously, Mr Moffatt said. And as a member of Tyre Stewardship Australia, Bridgestone is committed to increasing the recycling rate of end-of-life tyres. Our environmental initiative Tomorrow Matters includes not only this recycling effort, but research into tyre development and minimising the environmental impact of our products and manufacturing processes. Our partnership with Tyrecycle is one of the important relationships we have with Australian Tyre Recyclers Association members and serves our global environmental mission statement, which is to help ensure a healthy environment for current and future generations. Tyrecycle Chief Executive Officer, Jim Fairweather, said the alliance with Bridgestone was one of the most significant and long-standing of all the relationships that Tyrecycle holds with tyre retailers and industry groups across Australia. With major recycling facilities across the country and a national collection process, we are the leading tyre recycler, servicing more than 1,000 stores every week, Mr Fairweather said. That position, combined with Bridgestone s significant market position, means we will continue to make major inroads into the national challenge of managing end-of-life tyres. Tyretalk, Tyrecycle Newsletter, August 2016, pp 6-7 Copy reprinted with permission. AT LEAST 106,000 TONNES OF USED TYRES HAVE BEEN HANDLED BY TYRECYCLE EQUAL TO MORE THAN 12.5 MILLION PASSENGER TYRES. 12
