3 Wild Baltic salmon: the treat is real! Luga is the biggest salmon river in the Gulf of Finland basin. Good water quality in comparison with Finland rivers. Not many dams, not very intensive industry. Luga river 359 km sq m of spawning areas, spawning salmons (500 wild ones) Potential is 40 times more. 3

4 Luga River water catchment area The Luga basin belongs to Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions. Salmon spawing grounds in the low stream. The Ramsar area - Kurgalskij Nature Reserve - in the Luga river mouth. Several regional nature conservation reserves: landscape, geological, botanical. The SCHEME for Integrated Use and Conservation of Water Objects: 4 the only basin document in RF

8 Luga River environmental challenges Around 65% of the water management sites are classified as very contaminated or "dirty (2011) Negative impact of flooding, costal degradation. Nutrient pollutions from agriculture and wastewater. Lack of hydro meteorological and hydrological data. Absence of basin management! NO RBMP! 8

9 Needed measures for Luga River restoration and conservation Monitoring and researches, eco-control. Reduction of nutrient pollutions via promotion of WWT technologies, sustainable farm waste utilization/recycling and organic agriculture. Prioritased promotion of wild salmon restoration in comparison with fish farming. Preventing illegal fishing. Development of punishment system and practice. Raising public awareness on river values and green lifestyle for reduction of human impact to environment. Promotion of basin planning. Involvement of stakeholders, development of Public Advisory Teams/Public Councils, proposals to RBMP.

10 NGO activities for Luga river protection Public River Watch: < 30 groups, 10 observation points in Luga basin. Developing methodology, trainings for RW group leaders, annual conference Analysis of nutrient load sources, climate change consequences. Dissemination of the best practices of sustainable farming /nutrient management (study tours, seminars). Establishing demonstration dry toilets in local communities. Publications for awareness raising on individual and local green solutions, River Festival. 10
