Today s global economic scenario reflects growth and development in and around Asia Pacific Countries One of the Key sectors for rapid growth is urban infrastructure 2

Demographic migration from rural to urban areas are fuelled by attraction of employment opportunities and lures of comfortable living. While developed world is seeing stability in urban population with more than 70% in urban centres, large developing countries like and china have urban population level at 30 and 40 percent respectively, and are going through mass migration process 3

The possibility of creating Greenfield urban centres is remote in developing countries. Rapid migration results in the expansion of urban centres into adjacent areas with minimal development of infrastructure. As a result huge burden comes on existing infrastructures causing collapse situation for services like water supply, drainage and sanitation, power supply and transport network. 5

While city administrations capitulate under the burden the government of the country takes charge - Strengthens the local bodies financially Arranges funds for new development Organizes borrowing from external funding agencies. Planning for corrective action starts at this point. 6

Basic needs for organized urban life are: Adequate Power Safe Water Satisfactory Drainage and Underground sewerage Solid Waste Management Adequate Community space / parks and water bodies / entertainment centres Provision of above in an overgrown urban centre needs concept plans / detailed engineering / treatment process / rehabilitation and regeneration plans 7

Consultants entrusted with renewal and rehabilitation of urban centres need technologies and expertise for : Data collection and processing Scientific recharging of ground water & effective water harvesting Technology for micro tunneling and pipe bursting. Transport networking with optimum use of new & old transport units New Technology for treatment of water with minimal land use Gainful use of solid waste for production of power and compost Advanced CAD based analysis for integration of old pipe network with new Use of media for creating awareness in the community & harnessing of community support This demand prompts need for networking with consultants from other countries who can lend their experience 8

Sanitation - New underground Sanitation Project for added areas 9

Urban Water Issues in Water from faucet is not safe to drink Water supply in all cities is intermittent. Very old and poor distribution systems Water gets contaminated while flowing from the treatment plant to users Large leakage loss Very little metering of supply Almost all urban houses have underground and overhead storage with pumps, and point of use treatments. Poor, financial and institutional management 13

Facts About the Metropolitan City of Calcutta The City is more than 300 years old Water supply system is about 130 yrs. old Area 187 Sq. km. Population 4.8 million (Commuter population additional 2 millions) Slum population: 25% of total population 14

Facts About Water System in Kolkata No metering except in the case of a few large customers Revenue Source: Property tax Weak financial position Institutional deficiencies Deteriorated Infrastructures Too many employees 15

Issues of Kolkata Water Supply Old and Inefficient Pumping System Tuberculated, Corroded Unlined Cast Iron Water Pipes Water Supply Coverage : 66% of the City Population 16

Issues Kolkata Water System Intermittent Water Supply Inadequate Quantity and Pressure, Poor Quality of Water 17

Goals For Kolkata Water System Improvements Provide 24-Hour Safe Drinking water Supply of High Pressure and Good Quality Maintain Residual Chlorine throughout the Service Area Provide 100% Service Coverage Eliminate Groundwater Supply Eliminate Unfiltered Water System Eliminate In-House Storage and Pumping Reduce Unaccounted Water from 35 to 15% Metering and levying water cess 18
