ENVIRONMENT: Is There A Change In Climate Towards Saving The Earth Mr Edwin Khew Chairman, Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore 1

Sea ice in the Arctic is declining at a rate of 9% per decade (NASA) Arctic sea ice trends to 2002, Arctic sea ice area shrank by km 2 /decade, while Antarctic sea ice declined on average by km 2 /decade* Melting sea ice has little effect on sea levels, but Greenland ice and Antarctic mainland ice do affect sea levels. * 2

Investment in clean energy overtakes fossil energy Clean and fossil energy investment [USD billion] Capex of top-20 quoted O&G companies plus top-20 quoted coal companies Large hydro Other Solar Wind Expected Chart: BNEF. Notes: Nominal values. Renewable energy includes large hydro, investment made at financial close. Fossil fuel is gross investment on coal, gas and oil capacity. BNEF assume capacity retirement of 3.3%/yr for coal, 4%/yr for gas and 2.5%/yr for coal in all countries where fossil capacity is net positive. Assume retiring capacity is replaced in countries where fossil fuel capacity additions are net positive and not where additions are zero or negative. Count fossil fuel investment in the year when capacity was commissioned (owing to a lower visibility of data). Q figures do not include corporate & government R&D, or EST asset finance estimates which are compiled on an annual basis only. 3

Renewables dominate net new capacity in EU Source: EWEA 4

Electricity generation already >95% from gas To reduce CO 2 further, must focus on EE and RE Data: from IEA, from EMA. * Others = waste, coal, biomass, PV 5

Singapore s commitment to sustainability through targets Carbon Tax for large emitters of Green House Gases to be imposed from % reduction in energy intensity from 2005 levels by 2030 Sustainable Singapore Blueprint 80% of all buildings to be green by 2030 Energy Conservation Act Mandatory energy management practices for large consumers of energy Economic Strategies Committee 7

Carbon Tax Announced on 20 th February 2017 Will impact large emitters Expected to be in the range of SGD 10-20/tCO2 Carbon tax incentivises investments in Energy Efficiency & Low Carbon solutions About 40 countries and 20 cities, states and provinces have implemented some form of carbon pricing,(world Bank) 8

Energy Efficiency Buildings 9

BCA s New Standards for Energy Efficient Buildings Dr John Keung, CEO of BCA said: Our medium term aspiration is to have: Positive-energy Low-rise, Zero-energy Medium-rise, Super Low-energy High-rise buildings in the tropics. To realise this, we need to achieve breakthroughs with innovation as part of our green building agenda going forward. The BCA SkyLab is one such initiative it is one of the most innovative projects we have undertaken and one of our proudest accomplishments. The BCA SkyLab aims to significantly improve energy efficiency beyond the current best-in-class Green Mark Platinum buildings which are already at least 30% more energy efficient than a code-compliant building. 10

Energy Efficiency for Industry 1.Energy Conservation Act (ECA) Companies with business activities in the industry sector that consume energy beyond the energy threshold (54 TJ of energy per calendar year) are required to appoint an energy manager, report energy use and greenhouse gas emissions and submit energy efficiency improvement plans to NEA 2. Incentives & Grants Energy Efficiency Fund (E2F) Singapore Certified Energy Manager Training Grant One Year Accelerated Depreciation for Energy Efficient Equipment & Technologies Energy Efficiency Finance Scheme 3.Energy Efficiency National Partnership (EENP) 11

Cleantech in Singapore Cleantech hub for Research & Financing Robust investment in R&D and IP Generation Living Lab to tropicalize Singapore Business incubation and commercialization hub Focus on directing resources to solving environmental issues Access to 2.8 billion people within 7 hour flight radius 12

Enable and promote PV installations SolarNova target: 350MWp by 2020 (126MWp installed as of 31/12/16) Data: EMA ( ) 13

Latest industry trend: Floating PV Making good use of available water surfaces United Kingdom: Japan: 6.3 MW p on a water reservoir in London (Thames Water); in operation MW p largest floating PV plant (Kyocera); under construction. Large-scale announcements (up to 350 MW p ) in: Brazil, India, China 14
