We associate music events with posi=ve emo=ons, fun and happiness

If we think about energy, it s predy much the opposite: Peak oil, nuclear crisis, fracking, climate change

More and more people are shocked by the consequences of our energy demand

Engaging audiences in energy produc=on at music events, has become a trend over the past years

More and more pioneering venues promote a greener event culture

Pioneers also gained first research results and developed publica:ons

as well as large scale coopera:ons and long- term vision

Equipment producers developed first products

Despite these remarkable pioneering ini:a:ves, the music industry isn t sustainable on a whole and energy consump:on is s:ll a blind spot for the mainstream of the industry.

In Short: Music events and energy consump=on Outdoor events: Power generators are oversized and inefficient Indoor events: Power is wasted, mostly, due to a lack of awareness

That s where EE MUSIC comes into play: Our goal is to build long- term solu:ons and develop capaci:es for smarter energy solu:ons for the music event industry in Europe

The European Perspec=ve: The European music event industry is a highly fragmented place In terms of energy savings: low hanging fruit Even with liole investments, large energy savings could be accomplished - the level of energy efficiency is very low.

The European Perspec=ve: The energy industry is also rela:vely fragmented: Different levels of public awareness, different supplier- and business models, different policies

Why you should join Business Perspec:ve Environmental Perspec:ve Change & Innova:on Perspec:ve

Big arenas are already switching to energy efficiency

The reality is: energy costs will rise and investments in efficiency will pay off The main reason for wasted energy and money is a lack of knowlegde, not a lack of money

Environmental Perspec=ve CO2 Emissions of the UK industry 2007 EE MUSIC is tackling venues and power generators at outdoor events 27% of the whole industry emission 2007

Mobil:y is the biggest contributor and we can help you find solu:ons to tackle the issue. But the emissions related to your energy consump:on are your own, real emissions (people drive cars go by car anyway even when they don t visit to your event).

Showing by Doing

Music events are the perfect place to promote possibili:es and solu:ons towards a more sustainable energy future

To protest...

But most importantly: to create posi=ve ideas and possibili=es

The EE MUSIC IG TOOLS and the European IG Tools Database

Introduc:on music.eu

When organisa=ons, like Julie s Bicycle and the Green Music Ini=a=ve, started to ques=on the environmental impact of the music industry 6 years ago, it turned out that we did not know much about the carbon emissions of the sector.

Julie s Bicycle started to develop a set of carbon calculators, the IG Tools, based on a database containing data of UK clubs, venues and fes=vals.

The tools were designed to fit the needs of the music industry. They allow to calculate the carbon emissions related to venues, events, produc:on and touring.

They also allow users to compare the energy performance with the average benchmark, based on the IG Tools database So users can compare their venue or event with average data related to their sizer, audience etc

Over =me the database has grown. Now, over 1000 venues, clubs and fes=vals are using the Tool and are part of the database.

The data allowed Julie s Bicycle to analyse the UK industry like never before.

Together with the EE MUSIC team, JB developed the IG Tools for venues and outdoor events for 27 European countries.

Our long- term goal is to build a European database, with benchmark data for different regions.

What are your benefits? Why should you use the EE MUSIC IG Tools?

Most carbon calculators are designed for individuals at home or office- based businesses. They measure impacts such as office energy use and staff travel.

We ve designed the EE MUSIC IG Tools to accurately measure impacts from ac:vi:es such as touring, site specific work and temporary power provision.

They even have sector- specific metrics. For example we measure the impact of fes=vals per audience day ; and the impact of venues 'per performance per seat'.

You can also use the EE MUSIC IG Tools to compare the energy performance of your venue or event to benchmarks comparable to the size of your venue.

How to use the IG Tools

The EE MUSIC IG Tools are free to use and browser- based music.eu

Ajer sekng up an account, you type in your energy data and the Tools prompt out the related carbon emissions

You can type in your data on a yearly or a monthly basis, but you can also use it to compare your performance ajer implemen:ng efficiency measures.
