1 BAUER Environment Group installs PURE-Reed Bed Sewage Plant in midst of the desert The Gulf States and specially the UAE are in the head lines of the international press mainly because of their bold construction sites. German companies gain from this boom with huge project orders. Now it s the time to get also lucrative and unconventional orders from their neighbour states: in Oman BAUER Environment Group constructed a PURE-Reed Bed Sewage Plant under just not conventional conditions as can be imagined. If you want to perform a construction site in the Sultanate of Oman, you have to be prepared for some specialities. For example: BAUER Environment Group key personal had to pass partly very rough desert roads before they reached Abu Butabul - just about 600 km distance from the Sultanate s Capital Muskat (Pictures 1 4). The place is located in the midst of the desert (picture 5 + 6) and the client (an international oil drilling company) wanted to have a biological sewage treatment plant for its labour camp for 200 persons. But not anyone: it had to be a PURE-Reed Bed, a system based on experiences of about 20 years.

2 The project was complex not only because of its outback location the filter material and the reed plants had also to be delivered from some 400 km distance, because the local material was not suitable. When is was recognized that the ground in this desert location is not only sandy, but also quite hard (already after some 5 cm of loose sand a hard rock layer is commencing) BAUER Environment Group experts decided to fill the site and construct the plant with filled up ground and dams (pictures 7 13: different earth moving equipment). This gave the designer the chance to handle the sewage water inside the plant with natural gravity. After having completed the earthworks (picture 14), ready made geo-textile and foil (picture 15), as well as the suitable filter material (picture 16) were installed. Pipe works in this weather conditions are also very demanding (pictures 17 & 18), but was successfully performed and connected to the pumping station (picture 19) and the control panel (picture 20). Of course we also would like to mention that safety on site had a touch of German Standard which we proved with our stairs with handrail (picture 20).

3 The installation of the sewage water loading device (picture 21 right side) and last but not least the planting of the reeds (pictures 21 23) completed the system. And we already got an animal visitor (picture 22), who recognized the plant as good for food. Despite of all the special geological and climate-wise conditions (maximum temperatures of 50 C) the employees of BAUER Environment Group were able to handover the plant to the Client in January 2008 after 10 working weeks of construction and a successful testing period. Key Features of the project: - 2 basins with approx. 13 x 33 m each for the first treatment stage, - 1 basin of 15 x 35 m for the second stage, - 1 shaft for sewage water collection (diameter 1,2 m, height 2,5 m), - 1 shaft for treated sewage water (diameter 2,5 m, height 3 m), - 1 control panel for the whole plant, - some m of pipes (2 and 4 inches) above ground and in trenches and - 1 biotope pond for the treated water.
