Soil and water samplings in Aegina Chemical analyses and results evaluation Composting of pistachio wastes in Aegina Technical study regarding the Environmental status of Aegina island Construction of portable field equipment Inventory enrichment Fill the questionnaires at the home page of AgroStrat web site and assist us to collect data regarding pistachio cultivation practices and technical issues to be used for a Life Cycle Analysis. 2 Soil Quality The problem of soil Electrical Conductivity Irrigation water in Aegina has very high Electrical Conductivity. Pistachio farmers use a system of pipes that irrigate mainly the area near the tree and especially under the tree canopy. This causes increase in soil electrical conductivity under the tree canopy which increases with depth. 3 Composting of pistachio wastes Pistachio wastes were composted in a pilot field in Aegina island. Goat manure and straw were used as feedstock, as well. The natural zeolite clinoptilolite was added to the one of the compostable mixtures. The produced composts were of very good quality and with low phytotoxicity, however the compost produced without the use of zeolite has electrical conductivity.3 ms/cm, which is above the optimum value of ms/cm. Preparing the widrows M. Doula and K. Dimopoulos The electrical conductivity of the zeolite-compost was. ms/cm The polyphenols content of raw pistachio wastes was. g/kg. Polyphenols were reduced after composting to. g/kg for the compost produced without the use of zeolite and.3 g/kg for the zeolite-compost. Prof. K. Komnitsas compost wetting The inventory of the AgroStrat web page was enriched with data related to pistachio production, soil and water quality of the pilot fields, maps, statistical data, technical studies, scientific papers and general environmental issues. Subscribe yourself in the project forum for direct communication and knowledge exchange.

4 . Technical University of Crete LCA modeling of pistachio cultivation using Gabi software is carried out based on data provided by questionnaires filled by farmers and other stakeholders. Energy input-output calculations of pistachios cultivation / Econometric analysis of the energy balance using statistical package (Eview) Integration and combination of multiple input GIS datasets for Risk map creation using ArcGIS. Selection of suitable social-indicators for sustainable pistachio vera L. cultivation that have been adopted in other Mediterranean countries GaBi is a commercially available LCA software package for comprehensive life cycle balances that pulls together the best available industry and government data. Farmers could measure by themselves Soil ph Soil moisture Soil Electrical Conductivity Coordinates, date and time ph Use of electrodes made from antimony or copper material. Conductivity & Moisture Use of stainless steel electrodes Coordinates & date/time Recording via GPS integrated. Temperature. Construction of field equipment by IMS Use of thermistor sensor located inside the ph electrode. Measurements can be stored and transferred to a PC Measurements can be inserted in the software that will be developed by the beneficiaries Soil and water analyses can be inserted, as well. Soil and water analyses as well as measurements of the field equipment will be assessed and consultation will be given to farmers

5 AgroStrat participates in the th Fistiki Fest in Aegina 1 1 September, Aegina island, Greece Activities organized by AgroStrat: September 1-Workshop During the workshop the beneficiaries and also invited speakers will present the results and the assessment of the soil and water samplings, which took place in Aegina for the last 1.5 years. Other issues that concern pistachio cultivation will be presented, as well (cultivation practices, irrigation, irrigation water quality, fertilization, soil protection, waste management, composting pistachio wastes). 1 September 1-Composting training workshop The Beneficiaries will present and explain the results obtained from the pilot composting that took place in Aegina between November 13 and March 1 and resulted in the production of high quality compost from pistachio waste. The beneficiaries will train the participants in producing high quality compost from pistachio wastes and other available feedstock.
