1 CIH Awarding Organisation QUALIFICATION SNAPSHOT The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) is an awarding organisation for national qualifications at levels 2, 3 and 4. CIH is the leading awarding organisation for housing qualifications and we are dedicated to providing the highest quality, relevant and up-to-date qualifications for everyone in housing. Equipping your housing professionals with key skills and expert knowledge, with an accredited qualification from CIH, will drive improvement and add value enabling your organisation to compete more effectively. The qualification aims to: Develop skills and knowledge of those living in homes developed to high sustainability standards. Prepare learners for further study and progression to the CIH Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Housing Practice (QCF) or to inspire learners to progress to the range of qualifications and professions in related industries (retrofitters, energy advisors). Develop individuals ability to decrease their carbon footprint. Encourage adult learners back into education. CIH Award in Sustainable Living (QCF) The qualification reference number is 600/2599/2 Regulation start date: 15/07/2011 Qualification review date: 30/06/2013 The qualification is an introductory vocational qualification for the housing sector, which is broadly equivalent / comparable in standard to a GCSE or NVQ. The qualification is aimed at: People of all ages (minimum age 14). People who have a desire to learn how use their homes in a more sustainable way. The qualification is supported by Asset Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Housing.

2 Qualification Rules of Combination Qualification title: Credit value: 11 Minimum credit to be achieved at or above the level of the qualification: 11 Learners must achieve a minimum of 11 credits in order to be awarded the qualification. The qualification is graded on the basis of Pass / Fail. The qualification is not eligible for an aegrotat award. The Unit and Qualification Certificate will include the logos of the regulators of England (Ofqual), Wales (Welsh Government) and Northern Ireland (CCEA) and is accredited only for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The qualification may also be delivered in Scotland and Ireland. Define the terms sustainability and sustainable living Describe the range of lifestyle choices that sustainable living covers Compare the ecological and carbon footprints of three UK house types. 2. Understand how to gain and share information on sustainable living Compare a range of sources of information relating to sustainable living Describe how sustainable living can be promoted to others. Classify the type and range of waste households produce Describe what the impact of household waste is on the environment. 2. Understand how household waste can be reduced and reused Describe how household waste can be avoided and reduced Give examples of how household waste can be reused. 3. Understand what recycling is and how it can reduce household waste Define what recycling is Describe how recycling can reduce waste Demonstrate how and what household waste can be recycled. Define the term energy efficiency Explain why energy efficiency is important Illustrate the benefits of increased energy efficiency in the home. 2. Understand how to reduce energy consumption in the home Classify energy use in the home Describe how energy consumption in the home can be reduced Compare the current schemes and incentives for promoting the reduction of energy consumption in the home. 3. Know the technological options available for generating renewable energy in the home Identify the technological options available for generating renewable energy in the home Describe how two of the technological options available for generating renewable energy in the home work Explain how to use at least two of the technological options available for generating renewable energy in the home. Understand the impact of travel choices on the environment Compare the carbon emissions of different modes of transport Assess which modes of transport are the most sustainable.
