Status of SFR SDC and SDG Shigenobu Kubo SDC TF Member 12 th GIF-IAEA Interface Meeting, IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, March 2018

Safety Design Guidelines Development SDC (Phase I report issued 2013, to be updated) SDG on Safety Approach and Design Conditions SDG on Key Structures, Systems and Components Slide 2

SDC Update» The revised SDC report (Rev.1) submitted to EG members of GIF in October 2017.» The original SDC report was delivered to external entities for review such as national nuclear regulators and international organization in 2013.» The SDC TF received the comments from China s NNSA, USNRC, IAEA and IRSN. SDC TF has produced the revision of SDC as well as the resolution documents that include the response to the comment.» The revised SDC also reflects the revision of IAEA SSR 2/1. Slide 3

SDG on Safety Approach and Design Conditions Focus on Prevention and Mitigation of Severe Accidents, and Use of Inherent/Passive Safety Features Delivered the SDG report on Safety Approach and Design Conditions to GSAR and IAEA for External Review on April, 2016 GSAR : OECD/NEA Joint CNRA/CSNI Ad-hoc Group on the Safety of Advanced Reactors Slide 6

SDG on Key Structures, Systems and Components» SDG on reactor core, reactor coolant system and containment system for Gen-IV SFR referring to IAEA NSG series» Discussed table of contents» Identified 14 focal points on SFR specific parts to be investigated» Work sheet development for each focal point in link to related SDC and Safety Approach SDG» Development of SSC SDG based on focal point discussion Slide 7

Focal Points (1/2) Reactor core» Fuel and core integrity 1) Fuel element design to cope with high temperature, high internal pressure and high irradiation 2) Core design to ensure core cooling» Reactivity control 3) Active reactor shutdown 4) Passive shutdown mechanism or inherent reactivity feedback approach 5) Prevention of significant mechanical energy release during core degradation and IVR Reactor coolant systems» Component structural integrity 6) Component design to withstand high temperature and low pressure conditions Slide 8

Focal Points (2/2) Reactor coolant systems» Functions related to primary coolant system 7) Reactor cover gas and its boundary 8) Ensuring reactor coolant level» Prevention and mitigation of sodium chemical reactions 9) Measures against sodium leak and combustion 10) Measure against sodium water reaction (failure of heat exchange tubes of steam generator)» Decay heat removal 11) Application of natural circulation 12) Reliability (diversity and independency) Containment system 13) Formation of containment boundary and load factors 14) Containment function by intermediate coolant systems Slide 9

» First draft report on SSC-SDG under review by SDC TF» Future steps GIF inside review by RSWG, SSC, EG and PG Submit to GSAR and IAEA for external review Slide 10
