SUSTAINABILITY IN GENERAL WHY DO WE HAVE TO ACT NOW? Already today our way of life leads to dramatic consequences extreme weather events (storms, floods, droughts etc.) Crashes of ecosystems as plant and animal life cannot adapt fast enough Loss of sea ice and sea level rise: 20 cm since 1880; 30 to 120 cm by 2100 Great barrier reef 2016 Texas 2017 We constantly add more CO 2e emissions into the atmosphere than it can handle - by performing simple everyday actions, such as Commuting and travelling Using and consuming industrially manufactured goods Consuming goods from around the globe Portugal 2017 Caribbean, Hurricane Matthew

SUSTAINABILITY IN GENERAL PARIS AGREEMENT Extract from Wikipedia: The Paris Agreement (French: Accord de Paris), Paris climate accord or Paris climate agreement, is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year The language of the agreement was negotiated by representatives of 196 parties at the 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Paris and adopted by consensus on 12 December 2015.[3][4] As of August 2017, 195 UNFCCC members have signed the agreement, 159 of which have ratified it.[1] In the Paris Agreement, each country determines, plans and regularly reports its own contribution it should make in order to mitigate global warming.[5] There is no mechanism to force[6] a country to set a specific target by a specific date,[7] but each target should go beyond previously set targets. 9

SUSTAINABILITY IN GENERAL POEPLE THAT ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION These people are only some of a lot but it is up to all of us We cannot rely on others, we need to be active ourselves 10

SUSTAINABILITY IN GENERAL REASONS TO BE INTERESTED IN CLIMATE PROTECTION Personal As the current generation we have the liability to protect our environment for the future generations Climate protection for global equality Climate protection means perfect appreciation Climate change and its effects are unpredictable Business Government regulations Attracting new customers and binding existing (loyalty) encouraging motivation and creativity among the employees 11

THANK YOU 41

COMPENSATION PROJECTS: ENSURING THE POSITIVE EFFECTS Additionally Project can only be implemented with additional financing Independent validation Validation of CO2 reductions by external party, e.g. TÜV, SGS, DNV Permanence Emission reductions guaranteed permanently Certificates issued ex post No double counting Emissions are only accounted for once; certificates are not sold again Products & organisations are climate neutral if their carbon footprint was calculated and offset through emission certificates, issued for certified compensation projects. 43

ENSURING THE POSITIVE EFFECTS 1. Why are there no compensation projects within the European Union? Additionality cannot be guaranteed, because many carbon reduction initiatives are financially supported Double counting: All avoided carbon emissions are counted into the national reduction targets agreed upon in the Kyoto Protocol (developing countries do not have such reduction targets) 2. Why are compensations projects in developing and emerging countries more reasonable and effective? Greenhouse gas emissions are distributed in the atmosphere evenly Cost of emission avoidance is cheaper as in industrialised countries, which makes it cheaper and more effective It actively supports the technology transfer between industrialised and developing countries 44
