6 IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON VFDS It is good engineering practice to ensure that the application of VFDs within a facility does not cause excessive facility distortion. If the cable length between a VFD and a controlled motor is greater than 50 feet, additional motor winding insulation on the first few windings or the installation of an LC filter on the output of the inverter may be required. The VFD should be grounded in accordance with manufacturer s grounding requirements for noise as long as their requirement complies with applicable electric codes. The facility owner may want to consider VFD startup by a manufacturer representative, overcurrent trip protection, and critical frequency lockout. See IEEE 519 for further information. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS VFDs must be controlled by an automatic signal in response to varying air or water flow. Controlled motors must operate a minimum of 1,000 hours per year. Systems must have varying load operations such as variable flow or pressure regulation. Fan and pump operations that would otherwise be regulated by on/off cycling are not eligible for VFD incentives. Systems with constant speed and variable load operations (such as conveyors) are not eligible for VFD incentives. The following HVAC VFD installations are NOT eligible to use this application: 1. Replacement of an existing failed VFD 2. Variable pitch vane-axial fans 3. VFD used solely for balancing a constant flow 4. Control of existing 2-speed cooling tower fan 5. Stepped multi-speed control of fan or pump 6. Mitigation of oversized motor installation Prescriptive incentives will be provided for the installation of VFDs from hp for ONLY the HVAC installation types listed in this application. For chilled water and heating pump installations, at least 75% of pump capacity must be controlled by 2-way valves. Published manufacturer s information must be submitted with this application to demonstrate compliance for each of the following criteria: millisecond minimum ridethrough on the VFD control at full load and no inertia 2. Auto restart 3. Flying restart (start into rotating motor, speed search) 4. Under voltage trip 85% or less 5. Minimum 3% in line reactor or equivalent (choke, isolation transformer) based on drive horsepower 6. 95% minimum drive efficiency at full load and full speed minimum displacement power factor 8. Warranty of at least one year for parts VFD installation types not included on this application may be submitted for consideration by using the Custom application form. 6 of 8
