X A-3 Information about the project A3.1 Short description of the environmental problem The town of Veles is located in the central part of FYR Macedonia and it has 47. inhabitants. It is one of the biggest industrial centers in the country. The River Vardar flows through the town and separates it in two parts. 65% of the population lives on the right side of the river, and 35% on the left side. The total municipal and industrial wastewater is discharged directly into the River Vardar without any treatment. It directly influences the increase of the water pollution in the river. This is a very serious environmental problem and its solution is a top priority. A3.2 Origins and positive environmental impact of the project A3.2.1 Description of factors that inspired the project (driving forces) A3.2.2 Project main goal and objectives Pollution loading of the River Vardar has become unendurable. Citizen s protest against not solving environment problems (Veles is most polluted city in the country). Inhabitants in the River neighboring settlements supply water from draw wells located nearby the Vardar River (with extremely bad quality of the water). They also need cleaner water for irrigation. Vardar is an international river and there is contribution to crossborder environment impact. Pollution prevention of the River Vardar. Improvement of the living conditions (hygienic and health) for the local habitants. Construction of: Two urban collectors (on both sides of the river); Main collector which takes the wastewater at about 2.5 km downstream from the town; Wastewater treatment plant with technological processes that satisfies the standards of the EU Directive for wastewater treatment 97/271/EEC. A3.2.3 Expected positive environmental effects A3.2.4 Health impact of the project The River Vardar will be protected from pollution. Pollution of the draw wells located nearby the Vardar River will be decreased. Irrigation water from the River Vardar will be cleaner. Better hygienic and living conditions in the town of Veles and the settlements downstream of the River. Less polluted River will result in less polluted draw wells and reduced risks of epidemics.
