1 NATIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE Tuesday, 10 July 2018 Seri Pacific Hotel Kuala Lumpur TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE WASTE MANAGEMENT Opening Keynote Address YBhg. Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad bin Mentek Secretary General, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government

2 NATIONAL WASTE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE Towards Sustainable Waste Management Malaysians produce an average of 30,000 tons of waste every day. Only 5 percent of it is recycled. As Malaysia surges ahead with a renewed focus on urbanization and industrialization to maintain sustainable growth and development. However, with the ever-increasing population, rapid urbanization and industrialization, the waste generation as a result natural resource consumption is also rising at the equal pace. The country s build-up of waste is resulting in tremendous land and air pollution for the environment, health problems for communities and bottlenecks to economic growth. Taken together, the problem of poor waste management in Malaysia is one of the nation s biggest issues to date. For years, local and national governments have been trying to curb the flow of garbage onto sidewalks, into landfills, over hillsides and through rivers, but Malaysia s turbulent pace of change has made that process extremely difficult. Thanks to population increase, consumption and disposal rates are escalating faster than Malaysia s utilities can handle. Disposal of millions of tonnes of untreated garbage by the municipal bodies in the country is leading to health issues and environmental degradation. Waste management has become a major challenge for the federal government, state governments and its municipal bodies. In 2016, Malaysia produced an average of 38,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, which include 15,000 tonnes of food waste. Therefore, the Malaysian government is committed to improve the quality solid waste management over the last decade. Identifying the need for effective and efficient sustainable Waste Management as the need of the hour, the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) is organizing the National Waste Management Conference in Kuala Lumpur. The conference will be a unique forum for idea exchange, knowledge sharing, networking, exploring opportunities for collaboration and new business opportunities, while setting the policy agenda to meet future challenges in Waste Management. 4 PROGRAMME 8.30 am 9.30 am am am am pm 2.00 pm Arrival and Registration of Participants OPENING SESSION Welcome Remarks Tan Sri Dato Dr. Michael Yeoh Chairman, ASEAN Leadership Forum & CEO, Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) Opening Keynote Address Sustainable Waste Management Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by YBhg. Dato' Sri Haji Mohammad bin Mentek Secretary General, Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Morning Refreshments PANEL 1: Waste Management in Malaysia: Towards Sustainable Waste Management Inadequate solid waste management has become a significant public health, economic and environmental concern around the world. In 2016, Malaysia produced an average of 38,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, which include 15,000 tonnes of food waste. Therefore, the Malaysian government is committed to improve the quality solid waste management over the last decade. This session will look into: Integrated waste management challenges and issues What are the government initiatives and milestones? The Important of Accredited MS Certification & Challenges of Implementing ISO 1400 Exploring Malaysia s Five Years Development Plan, Government Transformation Program and National Green Technology Policy for a more sustainable waste management. PANEL 2: Industry Trends: What Should You Be Watching? Flexible packaging, recycling bans, driverless vehicles, worker shortage, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), commodity pricing what trends should you be watching? Find out what key trends, challenges, and opportunities will potentially impact your business in 2018 and beyond. Lunch PANEL 3: Garbage is Local: Changing Habits through Education When it comes to the environment, more people are becoming aware of the benefits of going green. However, it can be challenging for entire communities to embrace recycling, reuse, etc. In order to impact change in local communities, it s critical to educate consumers where they live, work and play. Are there any success story (ies) that can serve as an example? 3.00 pm 4.00 pm 5.00 pm PANEL 4: Plastic Waste and Marine Litter: Minimizing Our Footprint? It has been estimated in 2014 that more than five trillion particles of plastic were afloat in the ocean, weighing more than 250,000 tonnes. Plastic is now omnipresent in the ocean, and if we do nothing, there might be more plastic than fish in the ocean by Plastics and other persistent organic pollutants have been found in large quantities 10km deep down the Marianas trench. Marine litter, which is mainly composed of plastic, is a major environmental and public health problem that needs to be addressed now. How can we minimize our footprint? This session will address the following questions: How can we generalize a behavioral change toward the end of marine dumping? How can the waste pickers be fairly included in the process of cleaning the marine environment? In which ways can international cooperation contribute to the management of plastics in SIDS? What knowledge could be gathered to make current efforts more efficient? How can we prevent poisoning of local fishing communities? PANEL 5: Tackling Wasted Food with Smart Technology Between 30 40% of food is wasted in countries throughout the world, which results in a tremendous loss of wasted resources, as well as of opportunities to feed hungry people. As a result, the UN established in 2015 a sustainable development goal of halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level and reduce food losses along production and supply chains by This is a very ambitious goal, given current technologies as well as the structure of the food and waste sector. However, much innovation is occurring in the application of information and communications technology (ICT) all along the food supply (and food/waste) chain. The adoption of these smart technologies is creating new economic opportunities to reduce food waste and increase food waste recycling back into the production as energy and nutrients following processing via composting or anaerobic digestion. Discuss what and how new and innovative uses of smart technologies to reduce food waste. How do you prevent wasted food at the source), reuse (donating wasted food leftovers) and recycling (as energy or nutrient products following processing)? How robotics are addressing industry challenges such as the volatility of staffing sorting lines, raising revenue through higher material purities, and increasing throughput while lowering operating expenses, making recycling more effective and accessible.
