3 Open Positions Read below the two announcements for the open positions at the Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA) in the field of environmental electrochemistry and material science for water treatment. The postdoctoral research fellow and PhD student will work with Prof Jelena Radjenovic, in the scope of the ERC Starting Grant, ELECTRON4WATER ( ICRA is seeking to fill a postdoctoral research fellow position in the scope of the ERC Starting Grant ELECTRON4WATER - Threedimensional nanoelectrochemical systems based on low-cost reduced graphene oxide: the next generation of water treatment systems ( led by Prof. Jelena Radjenovic. The successful applicant is expected to conduct independent research on the project, and work closely with the PhD students working on the project. The scholar will also be exposed to a multidisciplinary research environment at ICRA, and potentially involve in other ongoing projects. Successful candidate will receive a twoyear contract, with possible extensions based on performance. Salary will depend on the previous experience of the candidate, as evaluated by the members of the reviewing committee. POSTDOC RESEARCHER FELLOW (ERC) (EURAXESS Job Offer id: ) jobs/ ICRA is offering one PhD position in the scope of the ERC Starting Grant ELECTRON4WATER - Threedimensional nanoelectrochemical systems based on low-cost reduced graphene oxide: the next generation of water treatment systems ( led by Prof. Jelena Radjenovic. The successful applicant will work closely with the postdoctoral fellows and students employed at the project, as well as other researchers at ICRA working in the related fields. The applicant will also be exposed to a multidisciplinary research environment at ICRA, have access to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, and enjoy collaboration opportunities with ICRA s international academic and industrial partners. Successful candidate will receive a oneyear contract, renewable every year till maximum 36 months after positive evaluation. 7 256 th National Meeting & Exposition Boston, MA 19 th 23 th August, 2018 A dvanced oxidation processes, which are based on the generation of highly reactive radical species (e.g., hydroxyl, peroxyl, superoxide, chlorine, sulfate, singlet oxygen) have shown great potential for them removal of contaminants of emerging concern and for the inactivation of pathogens. Water security and conservation are areas in which AOPs provide a means to remove small molecular contaminants, but each method has challenges that need to be overcome for their applications to become viable. This symposium will focus on the latest advances in the materials, underlying chemistry, and applications of advanced oxidation processes, alone or coupled with other technologies, for the removal of contaminants and pathogens of emerging concern. Examples of such contaminants include endocrine disrupting chemicals, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, cyanotoxins, and disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Papers are solicited on the chemistry of free radicals, fate of contaminants, AOP removal efficacy, mechanistic modeling, toxicity of byproducts, Topics covered in this session include, but are not limited to: Heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis UV/hydrogen peroxide UV/free chlorine Ozone, ozone with hydrogen peroxide Sonolysis Electron beams Solar-driven processes Nanotechnologybased processes Combined AOP/ physical//biological processes Role of AOPs in wa- Call for Papers Fenton/ PhotoFenton and Fenton-like processes Monovalent iron Catalytic ozonation Chemical oxidation Peroxymonosulfate, persulfate Photo-activated C60 Plasma Modeling of AOPs Electrocatalytic processes Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Treatment and Reuse: Applications and Implications Division of Environmental Chemistry Abstracts Submission Deadline: March 12,

8 15th International Symposium on Persistent Toxic Substances The International Symposium on Persistent Toxic Substances (ISPTS) is a well known international conference series hosted in prominent academic institutions around the globe. Persistent Toxic Substances (PTS) are receiving worldwide attention due to their high resistance to degradation from abiotic and biotic factors, high mobility, high bioaccumulation, and long term toxicity to the environment and human health. The ISPTS provides the primary platform for scientists, experts and students working on PTC to discuss and exchange information on environmental processes and toxicity, as well as on the development of innovative technologies for contamination control and remediation of PTS (including organic & metal-organic compounds, and so called "micro-pollutants"). The Symposium will focus on, but will not be limited to, the following themes: 1. Sources, transport and fate of PTS 2. Emerging contaminants of concern 3. Toxicology and eco-toxicology of PTS 4. Analytical and bioanalytical methods 5. Fate and Toxicity Modeling 6. Risk assessment of PTS 7. Mitigation and remediation of PTS 8. Environmental pollution and health 9. Tribute sessions to the lifework of Prof. Karl Fent 8

10 Members Updates Departures Mr. Toumazis Toumazi from Nireas- IWRC is leaving the position of the Grant Holder Manager and administrator of Nereus Cost Action. Dr. Irene Michael-Kordatou is now the contact person regarding administrative issues. The Chair, Vice-Chair and the Working Group Leaders are wishing the best to Mr. Toumazi for his support during the project. It was really special working with you. Everything was always running very efficiently and you were always capable of finding a solution whenever we needed help. Most of all thought you are an incredible person. New member A new member enters the NEREUS COST Action as an MC Observer, Dr. Angel G. Polanco Rodriguez from the Autonomous University of Yucatan, Mexico. Dr. Rodriguez is working under the WG3 and WG5 and his research interests include but are not limited to: Karst, water pollution, Epidemiology & public health, Human risk assessment and articipatory research, promotion health. Nereus COST Action ES1403 info@nereus-cost.eu Click to unsubscribe ( Subject: Unsubscribe) This newsletter is based upon work from COST Action ES Nereus, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) is a pan-european intergovernmental framework. Its mission is to enable break-through scientific and technological developments leading to new concepts and products and thereby contribute to strengthening Europe s research and innovation capacities. It allows researchers, engineers and scholars to jointly develop their own ideas and take new initiatives across all fields of science and technology, while promoting multiand interdisciplinary approaches. COST aims at fostering a better integration of less research intensive countries to the knowledge hubs of the European Research Area. The COST Association, an International not-for-profit Association under Belgian Law, integrates all management, governing and administrative functions necessary for the operation of the framework. The COST Association has currently 36 Member Countries. 10
