Show us the databases: what would Stephanie use? ì Janet Webster, Ha-ield Marine Science Center, Oregon State University Barb Butler, Oregon Ins>tute of Marine Biology, University of Oregon

Are the databases we purchase still useful? perhaps the economic situa1on is so difficult that they [librarians] would renounce subscribing to any pay for A&I service and just rely on Google/Google Scholar and Open source archives Richard Pepe

Database use at OSU:

Database use at UO:

For librarians?

For researchers? I use Web of Science a lot. I use Zoo Record, ASFA and Georef somewhat. I rarely use Google Scholar I much prefer ASFA to Web of Science I just use Google Scholar and I m aier the pdf

For students?

Navigating the changing landscape?

The tools: ì Aqua'c Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts ì Fish, Fisheries and Aqua'c Biodiversity Worldwide ì Google Scholar ì Scopus ì Web of Science

The disciplines and the journals: ì Fisheries (14 'tles) ì Marine Biology (30 'tles) ì Oceanography (17 'tles) ì Marine Science and Technology sec'on from Magazines for Libraries ì Butler and Webster, 2010

The good, the bad and the ugly:

Timeliness: Tool Marine Biology Fisheries Oceanography ASFA FFABW Google Scholar Scopus Web of Science 3 3 3

Timeliness? Aquaculture (22/87) Bulle>n of Marine Science (15/29) Con>nental Shelf Research (8/62) Estuarine Coastal and Shelf Science (12/132) Journal of Marine Systems(4/56) Journal of Physical Oceanography (13/63) Journal of Sea Research (6/62) Marine Mammal Research (13/57) (# ar'cles in current issue/# early online pubs)

How would you cite this?

What the editors are saying? My personal take is that all of the publishers are in so much of a rush to try and beat out each other with 'new' informa1on that they have finally reached the ridiculous. PuTng uncorrected manuscripts on line, uncorrected page proofs, etc. etc. Once someone gets this informa1on, they rarely bother to go back and get the final version or check to see what was changed/corrected. They are published as soon as they appear online.

If not timeliness, why purchase databases? ì WOS the display and the cita>on analysis. ì Scopus the currency, the addi>on of some early online and the cita>on piece. ì FFABW the coverage of southern oceans, Africa and tropical climes and inclusion in commonly used interface. ì ASFA the coverage of interna>onal and grey literature and depth of indexing.

Added value:

ASFA GS WOS Unique Shared by all ASFA GS WOS (vessel or ship) noise" and (whale* or "marine mammal ) anywhere/all years"
