SABS Water Check Inorganic Chemical proficiency testing provider for water laboratories NLA 20 September 2011

Presenter biography Chris Fouché Current Manager of SABS Food & Water Chemistry/ PTS Provider SANAS Technical Quality Assessor

Topics to be discussed 1. Why participate in proficiency testing? 2. Services provided by the SABS/ History 3. Different Inorganic Chemical Tests 4. SABS Water-Check Inter-laboratory Study 5. Benefits regarding PTS participation 6. Outlier Evaluation 7. Future SABS PTS scope additions

1. Why participate in proficiency testing?... A motor car engine running smoothly. Does the engine run on enough oil? Measurement with dipstick of the oil level. Full, halfway or empty. This dipstick measurement represents the quality lab results Where do you fit your laboratory?

2. Services provided by the SABS Established 1994 starting with 3 now 2011 at 230 SABS as a PTS provider is supplying the following service: Water -Test Inorganic Chemistry Water -Test Inorganic Chemistry High frequency service Monthly (January December) Flexibility of participation- Three chemical groups Choice of your own tests methods Using any of your applicable instrumentation Applying your own technique Self-Evaluation your own performance ISO Accredited by SANAS

3 Different Inorganic Chemical Tests Group 1 METALS testing ( Al, As, Ba, Be, B, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb,SeSi, Sr, V, Zn) January, April, July & October Group 2 NUTRIENTS testing (Ammonia, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Dissolved Organic Carbon Kjeldahl-N, Nitrate, O-Phosphate, Oxygen Demand, Suspended Solids, Total Organic Carbon, Total Phosphate) February, May, August & November Group 3 MINERAL testing (Alkalinity, Conductivity, Calcium, Colour,Chloride, Dissolve Solids, Fluoride, Magnesium, Nitrate, ph, Potassium, Sodium, Sulphate, Turbidity ) March, June, September & December

4. SABS Water Check Inter-Laboratory Study Water samples from real water sources such as Borehole, Drinking Water, River and Sewage Effluent. Synthetic prepared samples Supply directly to laboratories by courier Tests completed by participants Results returned and evaluated by SABS A Statistical report supplied to participants Reflection of test results grading: Z-score < 2 (Acceptable) 2 < Z-score < 3 (Questionable) Z-score > 3 (Unacceptable) Corrective action on outlier test results

5. Benefits regarding SABS proficiency testing An Accredited SANAS provider Participation of more than 230 laboratories Reflecting local and international results Participants from Cape Town to Dubai Frequent monthly evaluation report Annual Z-score certificates Use of supplied samples as CRM s Staff training Equipment evaluation Method validation Matrix effect verification Trend and bias investigation-control chart- Z score Statistical reporting as Robust SD Medium concensus value due to number of results

6. Outlier Evaluation Corrective action report Outlier Z score > 3 investigation Establishment of root cause Variables: Equipment Staff Competence Method Calibration Environment Uncertainty of results Investigate other results Quality Control Preventative Action Keep records and follow up on outlier bias and trends

7. Future SABS PTS Scope Additions Stable tests: Oil & Grease Uranium Surfactants Cyanide Bromate Volatile tests: Nitrite Chromium VI Chlorine Chloramine Bromate Phenol Trihalomethane
