2 THEME: Planet Earth In Crisis: Creating Sustainable Energy Resources and The Future of Aviation It has finally happened. With the availability of cheap natural resources, Earth s inhabitants became energy hogs, with no desire to conserve, recycle or explore for new sources of energy. After centuries of ignored warnings from scientists and engineers, we have reached the point that the end our supply of fossil fuels is in sight. Our reserves of natural gas, petroleum and coal have been depleted. Projections are that we will be out of fossil fuels shortly. Our unbridled use of fossil fuels has led to the pollution of Earth s land, water and atmosphere. This will result in the need for renewable energy sources for transportation including space and flight travel in the future.

10 Objectives Identify different types of light bulbs and their uses Compare the efficiency of incandescent and fluorescent blubs Determine the effect of a light bulb on its surroundings Describe how heat production relates to the type of bulb Graph and interpret data collected in the investigation

11 Methods Students will investigate the different types of light bulbs and their uses Students working in groups of four or five conduct an investigation to compare the efficiency of incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL) Graph and interpret data collected in the investigation Calculate a cost analysis and comparison for CFL and regular incandescent light bulbs

13 Application of Energy Conservation Discussion centered on the reason for the choice of bulbs in the home, schools, businesses, etc. Students came to the conclusion that even though CFLs cost more initially, considering the facts that they last much longer, they use less energy, and the amount of energy required to cool areas in which a large number of incandescent light is used they are the best choice if you are concerned about the environment.
