B3 Benchmarking Background Why benchmark? Account creation Data collection and entry Data analysis Dakota County Case Study
B3 Benchmarking: Background B3 stands for: Buildings Benchmarking and Beyond
B3 Benchmarking: Background The State of Minnesota B3 Energy Benchmarking program has been developed by the State of Minnesota Department of Administration and Department of Commerce to help State and local governments improve the energy performance of their buildings by tracking and managing facility energy consumption. mn.b3benchmarking.com Made in collaboration with private software design firm The Weidt Group
B3 Benchmarking: Background Current Statistics Public Buildings in B3 Number of Organizations 1,339 Number of Sites 4,879 Number of Buildings 6,435 Number of Meters 10,242 Total Square Feet 283,463,826 County 561 City 1564 State 2989 Public Schools 1321
Why Benchmark? You Can t Manage What You Don t Measure
Why Benchmark in B3? Benchmarking your buildings can help answer some of the questions you may have about your energy use. Which of my buildings are under-performing? How can I compare yearly heating costs taking in account unusually high winter temperatures? Is our City Hall energy efficient compared to others in Minnesota? Are our buildings performing up to their expectations based on square footage and space usage?
Why Benchmark in B3? Benchmarking is useful when your city, county, school district, or other entity would like to find the lowest hanging fruit efficiency projects. would like to demonstrate to others the value of your energy efficiency projects. would like to participate in various financing projects, including PBEEEP and GESP.
Why Benchmark in B3? Time for Questions
HOW-TO The following slides are detailed directions on how to create a B3 account and how to utilize the features. ACCOUNT CREATION DATA COLLECTION DATA ENTRY ANALYSIS

B3 Benchmarking: Analysis kbtu/sf/year This measure is a very important number to know. It is like an MPG for your car, but for your building. This building is using kbtu/sf/year
B3 Benchmarking: Analysis Note that being LESS than the benchmark is GOOD In B3, benchmarking is an engineering model that predicts how much energy a site would use if it were built to today s energy codes. The B3 rating is a measurement of a site s actual consumptions to its predicted benchmark.
B3 Benchmarking: Peer Comparison Peer Comparison is a ranking of a site as compared to other sites in B3 of similar space usage.
B3 Benchmarking: Energy Star Energy Star is a national program designed to promote energy efficiency. The B3 Benchmarking System is able to request your ENERGY STAR rating automatically using the data gathered in B3.
B3 Benchmarking: Energy Star Baseline is used to compare a site to itself using a defined time period. The baseline is weather normalized so that changes in weather do not affect the comparison.
B3 Benchmarking: Targets
B3 Benchmarking: Targets Relative Target: allows you to track your performance against a percentage below a specified baseline period. Absolute Target: allows you to compare actual consumption numbers to simulated ones.

B3 Case Study: Dakota County Wescott Library Project Summary: August 25, 2008 Library Closed September 2, 2008 Renovation began January 5, 2009 Library Re-Opened
B3 Case Study: Dakota County Wescott Library Project Details Create a more open and inviting floor plan Improve energy efficiency Add computers and computer training room Update restrooms to meet current code Convert patio space to interior library space (500 square feet addition) Utilize the mezzanine for office space Improve air handling efficiencies for patrons and staff Create space for future Café
B3 Case Study: Dakota County Wescott Library Energy Efficiency 16 LED light fixtures are featured in the common area near the base of the steps in the lower level. Each fixture will supply over 1400 lumens and each is expected to last over 50,000 hours while using about one-third the energy of an incandescent light. Premium efficiency motors with adjustable speed drives were added to the main air handling unit. Inefficient T12 light fixtures have been replaced by T5 s and incandescent lamps have been replaced by compact fluorescents. Adjustable speed drives were added to the heating pumps. Ductwork on the main level was repaired and made airtight during construction resulting in a 14% improvement in airflow and better heating and cooling throughout the library.
