Policy support 5 Ambitious targets for a sustainable, secure and competitive energy system. Energy Technologies have to become clearer, safer and more affordable. European Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET-Plan) 2020: - reach its goals, providing a framework to accelerate the development and deployment of cost-effective low carbon technologies. 2050: -is targeted at limiting climate change to a global temperature rise of no more than 2 C (reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by 80-95%)

Strategic Energy Technology Plan 6 The SET-Plan is the technology pillar of the EU's ENERGY & CLIMATE CHANGE policy Goals: Accelerating knowledge development, technology transfer and up-take; Maintaining EU industrial leadership on low-carbon energy technologies; Fostering science for transforming energy technologies to achieve the 2020 Energy and Climate Change goals; Contributing to the worldwide transition to a low carbon economy by 2050.

SET-Plan implementation mechanisms 7 Implementation is via: Steering group: defines overall strategy and reinforces coherence between national, European and International efforts. SET-Plan Information System, provides up-to-date information on the state of energy technologies, human and financial resources. European Industrial Initiatives European Energy Research Alliance

European Industrial Initiatives 8 Industrial Initiatives Smart Cities Fuel Cells - H2 Wind CCS Bioenergy Fission Solar Electricity Grid 7 European Industrial Initiatives Wind Solar Electricity Grids Carbon Capture & Storage Nuclear Fission Bio-energy Smart Cities - Industry, academia, Member States and the Commission (public-private partnerships). - Focus on technologies for which the barriers, scale of investment and risk can best be tackled collectively. - Technology Roadmap and Implementation Plan

The Solar Europe Initiative 9 Activities: - Focuses on photovoltaics and concentrating solar power technologies. - Make technologies more competitive, facilitate large scale penetration and integration in the the electricity grid. -12% of European electricity demand by 2020 (PV) R&D programme for PV and CSP: enhance performance and lifetime of PV systems and components; reducing generation, O&M costs, minimising environmental footprint. PV pilot production plants with innovative manufacturing processes. Demonstration projects of power production in decentralised applications, building integrated, centralised power plants at industrial scale.

Technology Roadmap: Solar Industrial Initiative 10

European Energy Research Alliance 11 -Working since 2008 to align individual research organisation R&D activities to the needs of the SET-Plan priorities, and to establish a joint programming framework at EU level. - 2nd Strategic Research Agenda (by Photovoltaic Technology Platform): research targets Typical turn-key price for 100kW system (2011 /W, excl. VAT) Typical electricity generation costs, Southern Europe (2011 /kwh) Today Long term potential Typical system energy payback time, Southern Europe (years) <0.5 < kw commercial roof system, Italy PR of 80%, yield of 1440 kwh/kw 25 year lifetime, discount rate of 6.5% Current and 2020 values consistent with SEII KPIs
